Doing the literature review: Scoping search

Scoping search A scoping search is a search technique you can use as a first step in your literature review: its main objective is to rapidly and efficiently determine the scale of a predefined topic. Creating an overview of keywords used When you do a scoping search it can be hard to extract the keywords attached to records in the search result. To get an overview of those keywords, you can use a visualization tool like VOSviewer. There are more tools like this one, but for this module we focus on VOSviewer. Example of an author keyword map. Activity: Creating a keyword map with VOSviewer. Related.

Week 2: Analysing a Case

Around an inspiring video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. Essential case-solving techniques to help students tackle complex real-world problems, are being introduced and trained. The instructors explain that effective analysis goes beyond listing facts—it’s about uncovering insights that address the “so what” question. Key methods covered include critical thinking, analytical frameworks (like VRIO, Porter’s 5 Forces, and GAP analysis), and the 5 WHY technique for identifying root causes. Using a concrete case example, they show how a deeper issue—ineffective communication—was the true cause of low user engagement. By the end of this lesson, students understand how to structure their analysis, avoid common mistakes, and use insights to drive solution development.

Dr. Katalin Karikó | Radboud Honorary Doctorate

On 20 October 2022, the day that Radboud University celebrated its 99th anniversary, Dr. Katalin Karikó received a Radboud honorary doctorate in recognition of her scientific contributions to developing mRNA-based vaccines. This edition includes the laudatio of the honorary supervisor and the speech of the honorary doctor. Karikó spent years researching medical applications of mRNA. Her dream was to develop synthetic mRNA and use this to cure cancer, strokes, and influenza. Eventually, after years of toil, rejection, and criticism from colleagues, she and fellow researcher Drew Weissman demonstrated that it is possible to trigger an immune response in the body with mRNA without the body turning against the mRNA itself. With this breakthrough, a new revolutionary technique was born. Thanks to Karikó’s scientific work, BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna were able to develop the current mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. A prime example of the beneficial impact that fundamental research can eventually have on society. Honorary supervisor Floris Rutjes, Professor in Organic Synthesis: “With courage and determination, she pursued her scientific vision for a very long time, and by doing so, she has ultimately made a significant contribution to the fight against viral diseases.” Part of the Doctor Honoris Causa Series series.

Cast Glass

In this video, Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou explain the process and potential of glass casting as a method for creating three-dimensional architectural components. This technique allows for the creation of complex, solid glass shapes that fully utilize the material's high compressive strength. The process is divided into two main types based on the starting state of the glass. Primary casting involves founding glass from raw ingredients and includes methods like hot pouring. Secondary casting, or kiln casting, involves reheating pre-made solid glass pieces in a single kiln. A critical step is annealing, the controlled cooling to relieve internal stresses, a process that becomes lengthier for thicker pieces. The molds that are used are either disposable (for unique shapes, rough finish) or permanent (for series production, smooth finish). The main architectural limitation is the immense annealing time for large components, confining most applications to brick-sized units. However, topology optimization (reducing mass while maintaining stiffness) can drastically cut cooling times, enabling future large-scale, monolithic glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Spray Painting Glass

In this video, Emanuel Nowak and Matthias Seel detail an innovative and experimental process for Spray Printing Glass. The project began as a seemingly impossible challenge from a colleague, Erwin, to create glass structures using a modified airbrush system. The team, including a glassblower and engineers, adapted a metal repair torch to spray 100-micron thick soda-lime and borosilicate glass beads onto various substrates like stone, glass, and woven sheets. The initial results were rough and porous, with a "Swiss cheese"-like structure at the interface between the print and the base plate. Through iterative experimentation, they refined the process by adjusting parameters like the burner type, nozzle heat, and using a heating chamber. This led to more transparent, translucent prints with fewer pores and better adhesion, allowing them to create larger and more complex small-scale structures. The vision for this technique spans from artistic applications like glass graffiti to functional architectural panels with potential for improved stiffness or acoustic performance. Chemical/Laboratory Techniques: Extraction

This open video (CC-BY-NC-SA) was created by chemistry teachers of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen for use in the lab at their faculty. The description of for the video reads the following: Liquid-liquid extraction is a technique in which two non-miscible solvents are employed to separate a mixture of compounds based on their relative solubility in one of the two phases. Extraction is often used for the primary isolation of a product from the reaction mixture. Typically, the two phases are water (polar phase) and an organic solvent (apolar phase). It is, however, also possible to use two organic phases such as the combination of acetonitrile (polar phase) and pentane (apolar phase) for the extraction. The polar compound dissolved into the polar phase while the apolar compound dissolve into the apolar phase.
