Citizens and Air Quality in Beijing

Towards the end of the previous video, Gert Spaargaren mentioned the recent increase in online activity by NGOs and Chinese citizens or so called ‘netizens’. Indeed, many Chinese citizens have at some point been engaged in monitoring and measuring air quality themselves. Last couple of years, different datasets and sometimes conflicting interpretations of air quality in China proliferated. The next video addresses the uncertainties with respect to air quality data and how citizens and the government deal with them. In an interview with Fan Yechao, you will learn what citizens in Beijing think of PM2.5 and how they perceive the ways in which air quality problems are addressed by the government. Do they believe that the Chinese government will be effective in creating a ‘blue sky that lasts’ above Beijing? LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Understand and apply tools and methods for analyzing complex governance arrangements and for facilitating meaningful engagement in a multi-actor context. DURATION: 1 short video (~6 min long)

Air Quality in Amsterdam

In this module, we will visit the Amsterdam-based NGO ‘Waag Society’ to see how they address air pollution and help co-create solutions. This institute for art, science, and technology works on many topics that involve citizens and socio-technical change. The Waag Society also works with citizens to counter air quality problems, but in a very different way. Let’s have a look! LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events. DURATION: 1 short video (~4 minutes long)

Introduction to Air Quality in Amsterdam

Air quality in Amsterdam is not as good as it seems. Polluted air ranks third on the list of health risks in Amsterdam, directly following smoking cigarettes. This video is a broadcast by Groen Licht (‘Green Light’), a television program by one of the Dutch public broadcasting corporations, which is devoted to sustainability initiatives. Presenter Milouska Meulens explores air pollution in Amsterdam. She talks with fellow citizens about how they experience air pollution and together with dr. Bert Heusinkveld of Wageningen University, she investigates the actual levels of air pollution and the differences that exist between different streets in Amsterdam. The field recording in below video by Dr. Bert Heusinkveld on air quality in Amsterdam has been reused with permission from Groen Licht. It is part of the episode that aired on 5 December 2016. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events. DURATION: 1 short video (~9 minutes long)
