Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

Mind Measuring Mind

Mind Measuring Mind explores the foundations of psychological methodology, ethical research practice, and the pivotal role of measurement in understanding behaviour and mental processes. Blending teaching material, scholarly context, and personal perspective, it opens a dialogue about the challenges and responsibilities of doing science when the subject and the scientist share the same mind. Why is psychological science different from other sciences? Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike most other fields, psychologists use their own mental processes to examine those of others. This self-referential nature, “mind measuring mind,” brings unique challenges for psychological measurement and the interpretation of research results. This book critically examines psychology as a science, exploring the empirical cycle and the teaching of methodology and statistics. In most academic psychology programmes, students are expected to participate as subjects in psychological studies. To support this, a series of PBL tutorials was developed to familiarise students with the empirical cycle and encourage discussion of validity, research methods, ethical standards, scientific communication, and potential threats to responsible, high-quality research. The materials in this book are based on those tutorials. This open textbook is designed for first- and second-year BSc Psychology students at Maastricht University, particularly those navigating the renewed curriculum’s emphasis on ‘Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking’ (SICT). It serves as a flexible guide for students following individual learning paths, including participation in faculty-led research experiments, reflection on the empirical cycle, and connecting practical experiences to theoretical concepts such as methodology, statistics, validity, ethics, and scientific communication. Ideal for self-study, group PBL sessions, and research practicums, the book helps bridge hands-on research involvement with classroom discussions, supporting competency development in psychological research.

Understanding Glass Codes and Standards

In this video, Martina Eliášová outlines the critical role of codes and standards in the use of structural glass in modern architecture. As glass evolves from a simple infill material to a primary structural element in beams, columns, and load-bearing walls, ensuring safety becomes paramount. The framework has evolved from national standards to unified European Eurocodes, which harmonize design, manufacturing, and testing rules across the EU to ensure quality and safety. The key groups of standards cover glass production, material property determination (e.g., EN 1288, EN 16612), and the design of load-bearing structures (with the upcoming EN 19100). Essential testing standards are also outlined, including those for impact resistance from human bodies (EN 12600), manual burglary attacks (EN 356), and resistance to firearms and explosions, all necessary to meet the reliability and safety requirements for building structures throughout their service life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The Medieval Podcast | Balthild of Francia with Isabel Moreira

This year, we've spent some good quality time with early medieval queens, digging into their mysterious and spectacular lives and reigns. And when it comes to the spectacular, it's hard to compete with the star of this week's episode, a woman who arrived in Francia a slave, rose to become a queen, and then ascended to the heavens as a saint. This week, Danièle speaks with Isabel Moreira about Queen Balthild of Francia, her influence, and her lasting legacy. Sedak tempered +

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Julian Hänig introduces sedak's new product, sedak tempered+, a glass designed without optical anisotropies. Anisotropies are strain patterns that become visible as rainbow colors or spots in tempered glass, caused by non-uniform stress during the rapid cooling of the tempering process. While standards classify this as a characteristic and not a defect, it remains undesirable for architects. Using light scanners to quantify these stress patterns, sedak developed a new tempering technology that eliminates the visible anisotropies present even in the highest standard quality class (Class A). The result is a superior glass product that enables completely homogeneous and undisturbed glass facades, fulfilling a key demand in modern architecture. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Julian Hänig for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Luxottica Headquarter

In this video Nicola Greco explains the design and technical challenges of creating a fully transparent "crystal" building for the Luxottica headquarters in Milan's historical Palazzo Litta garden. The central architectural concept was achieved using a double-skin facade, which balances maximum transparency with high energy performance. Key challenges included selecting high-quality, low-iron glass with specialized coatings to minimize visual distortion and minimizing the visual impact of framing to maintain transparency. The passively ventilated double-skin facade provides a thermal buffer in winter and uses natural ventilation to remove heat in summer, with its performance validated through detailed steady-state and CFD simulations. The design also integrated innovative maintenance solutions, such as a rope access system within the cavity, to preserve the building's clean aesthetic. Special thanks to Nicola Greco for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Glass Sustainability: Reuse

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the concept and process of reusing architectural glass. Reusing glass panels or entire insulating glass units (IGUs) avoids the energy-intensive melting process of recycling, reducing CO2 emissions and preserving the material's quality. The process involves harvesting glass from buildings through selective deconstruction, followed by a complex disassembly to separate the glass from frames and spacers, and a critical quality assessment to sort the glass by its reuse potential. Despite its environmental benefits, glass reuse faces significant challenges. The disassembly of IGUs is complex and time-consuming, the logistics of handling large, brittle panels are difficult, and there is a lack of a strong market for secondary glass. Furthermore, collaboration across the supply chain, supportive regulations, and further research on issues like non-destructive quality testing are needed to make glass reuse a more viable and widespread practice. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Angelica Rota for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
