Chemical/Laboratory Techniques: Schlenk line

This open video (CC-BY-NC-SA) was created by chemistry teachers of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen for use in the lab at their faculty. The description of for the video reads the following: A Schlenk line or nitrogen-rack is used to place reactions under an inert atmosphere. This is useful because a lot of reagents, intermediates, or products are no stable when they are exposed to water or oxygen.

A Brief History of Window Glass

The video "A Brief History of Window Glass" presents an overview of production and use of glass in architecture from the 1st to the 19th century. The first attempts to shape glass window panels were recorded as early as the 1st century BC, wider application began in the first half of the 1st century, while the glass blowing techniques were more intensively practiced only from the 3rd-4th century. Each historical period has its own specifics in terms of production, and especially the way window glass is used in everyday life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar, Croatia. It is based on the exhibition "A Brief History of Window Glass" curated by Vedrana Jović Gazić, and the exhibition catalogue published by the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar. The original language of the video is Croatian. To view it with English subtitles and/or transcript, please follow the provided youtube link. The bilingual Croatian-English exhibition catalogue, as well as timecoded subtitles and video transcript in English and Croatian can also be separately downloaded. An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Week 6: Storytelling

Around an engaging video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. They learn how to harness the power of storytelling to enhance their case presentations. The instructors explain why storytelling is an essential skill for structuring and communicating insights effectively. They introduce the “Red Line” method for creating a logical flow from problem to solution and share tips for creating visually compelling presentations. Key advice includes using simple, branded slides, focusing on visuals over text, and maintaining a clear structure. This lesson will guide students in using storytelling to create presentations that are not only informative but also engaging and memorable.

U.Br.Columbia - Module Parasympathetic nervous system in the head

This is an interactive module about the parasympathetic nervous system in the head. The PNS in the head functions to constrict the pupil of the eye, accommodate the lens for near vision, stimulate tear production from the lacrimal gland, and stimulate saliva production from the parotid, submandibular, sublingual and small mucous glands in the hard palate. Workshop "Setting a Main Goal"

This document is developed because there are a lot of differences in how colleagues set goals. This had a negative effect on the treatment duration. This product is developed to improve formulating SMART goals using the ICF framework. You can use this PowerPoint if you want everyone to make goals the same way and get to see the advantages for the treatment to set better goals and use the ICF framework. How to use it: give the PowerPoint presentation to a maximum of +/-15-person group of colleagues with a mix of all the different disciplines. Make the PowerPoint interactive so that the value of setting a SMART goal using ICF is noticed by the colleagues themselves.

Glass Sustainability: Reduce

In this video Mauro Overend and Rebecca Hartwell outline strategies to meet EU net-zero targets by addressing both demand-side and supply-side emissions. Demand-side approaches, influenced by designers, include using less material through efficient structural design, relaxing deflection limits to allow for thinner glass, and improving building energy performance with high-performance glazing. A key focus is increasing the use of recycled glass cullet, which can reduce melting energy and process emissions, though current post-consumer cullet use remains below 5%. Supply-side approaches involve the glass industry switching to low-carbon energy sources like hydrogen or electricity and exploring alternative raw materials to reduce process emissions. The video concludes that a combination of smarter design, increased recycling, and cleaner production is essential for reducing the glass sector's environmental footprint. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Mauro Overend and Rebecca Hartwell for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Dredging Engineering: Special Topics

In dredging, production estimating is carried out mainly with analytical physical models of the different dredging processes. Slurry transport of settling slurries and cutting processes in sand, clay and rock are already covered in two other books by the author. Other processes like hopper sedimentation and erosion, water jet fluidization, cutter head spillage, pump/pipeline dynamics and clamshell dredging are covered in this Special Topics Edition. New topics may be added in the near future.
