Diversity in the City: Promises and Pitfalls

In this 7-minute video, Donya Ahmadi discusses urban diversity through a critical lens. Diversity is derived from many factors such as ethnicity, age, gender, socio-economic class, and sexual orientation as well as more fluid notions such as behavior, lifestyles, and activities. Defining diversity is the first step in understanding what constitutes diversity, its uses, and pitfalls. Part of the Spatial Justice component of a larger MOOC called 'Rethink the City: New Approaches to Global and Local Urban Challenges.'

The digital dilemma with Noortje Hoevens | In a Nutshell

What will a peak behind the governments’ screens show us? What do we need to know about digital governments? And how does digitalization change public values? Digitalization is not just technical – this is the key message of this week’s episode, in which Jara learns about the world of digital governments. Together with her guest Noortje Hoevens, she discusses the political and social aspects of digitalization and investigates how digitalization causes a shift in values – from intrinsic to IT values. Noortje is a PhD candidate at Radboud University. She investigates the relationship between digitalization and public values in Dutch public agencies. Do you want to learn more about the pitfalls of digitalization? Then, follow Noortje’s advice and watch the documentary “The Social Dilemma.” Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

Multidisciplinary Research Methods for Engineers

The use of data to understand phenomena and evaluate designs and interventions in different disciplines is increasingly evident. As a result, engineers and other applied scientists frequently find themselves needing to collaborate in multidisciplinary fields when carrying out research to remain innovative. This course will help you to become a successful multidisciplinary researcher in industry, non-profit, or academia, and be more efficient and successful as you will know where the pitfalls are! This course explains the fundamentals on how to plan and carry out state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative research in different phases of an innovation or research project. The course has been designed by a team of experienced, multidisciplinary researchers in education, engineering and research methodologies and will also feature experts in the field of research methodologies as guest lecturers. In the course you will be working towards creating a project plan for your research, giving you a head-start in your research project. The interuniversity, interdisciplinary Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center for Education and Learning is a leader in multidisciplinary technological research and innovation projects. Learning from leading experts in the field you will learn to apply the best practices in your own context.

Morbidity in primary care: Epidemiologic data from Family Medicine Network

To order a paper copy of this book, please follow this link: https://www.boekenbestellen.nl/boek/morbidity-in-primary-care/62677 'Morbidity in primary care' is a medical textbook that presents a selection of diseases, disorders and clusters of symptoms registered in 'Family Medicine Network' (FaMe-Net). FaMe-Net is a Dutch primary care registration network with decades of experience in the accurate registration of all morbidity presented to the GP. This registration is embedded in the daily practice of GPs providing regular care to their enrolled patients. All morbidity data from 2014 up to and including 2021 can be accessed at www.famenet.nl/morbidity-data. Each chapter presents the incidence and prevalence of the selected condition and the age and sex groups in which this condition is most common. Common reasons for encounter are described: symptoms, complaints or requests that patients present to their GP at the beginning of the episode of care. In addition, each chapter discusses common GP interventions (policy). The clinical course and registration of the condition are also described. Reading the chapters in this book familiarises the user with how epidemiological numbers can be found on the website. The chapters contain links to the web pages where the relevant data are displayed. This makes it an interactive textbook, as the user can apply their own selections and look up their own epidemiological question. For example, change the calendar period or answer the same question for a different condition, including conditions not yet described in this book. The accompanying text in the chapters helps interpret the numbers correctly and guard against potential pitfalls. This book is thus dynamically linked to the website. The topics have been carefully selected and present epidemiological data of both brief episodic and chronic conditions, harmless and more serious conditions, and also include so-called symptom diagnoses that occur regularly in primary care, such as 'sleep disorders'. The database and this book are updated periodically. The FaMe-Net registration network is unique in systematically recording the patient's reason for encounter in every contact with the GP (practice), and the interventions carried out, such as radiology/imaging, laboratory diagnostics, prescription of medication and referrals to primary and secondary care. This allows the correlation between reason for encounter, final diagnosis and interventions to be visualised. This book is written by general practitioners practising in registering practices, many of whom are also affiliated with Radboud University Medical Centre as researchers, lecturers or trainers. The book is intended for general practitioners, GPs in training, medical students and researchers.

Transitioning towards a circular (healthcare) economy - BOOK

This book offers a comprehensive roadmap toward a circular and sustainable healthcare system, structured into three distinct parts. Part I describes circular principles and policy tactics. Chapter 1 outlines the essentials of sustainable healthcare and designates the paradox in daily practice of sustainability and the circular economy. In Chapter 2 the impact of leadership on policy together with best practices is discussed. The legislation and infrastructural web, in which many stakeholders and circular economy initiatives are strangled, is described. Despite the fact that politicians and policymakers are motivated to encourage sustainability, the infrastructure is designed to discourage circular economy projects. This chapter shows examples of setting-up intrinsic motivated teams of hospital staff, green teams, industry leaders and scientific motivated research teams. Swimming against the current is about the legislation paradox. In chapter 3 described as how legislation should be redesigned to accomplish the goals as set out in the green deal and the climate law. Part II serves as a practical guide to implementing circular strategies. In chapter 4 the reader is guided through the fundamentals of circular strategies by visualizing the circular economy. Chapter 5 reveals successful design strategies for products and processes which contribute to a zero-waste society. Using recycled materials by using waste as input for new products is described in chapter 6. In chapter 6 we will explore (surgical) waste as input for new products. Recycled should and could be used more. This is a fundamental concept within circular design principles but hardly used until this moment. Part III explores circular economy design principles on basis of successful examples. This part dives into real-world applications and measurable outcomes. It showcases successful circular design concepts and business models that have reshaped the market. Chapter 7: Is about leading by design. Success stories of circular concepts which have effectively changed the market with circular products and services are designated. Also entrepreneurial success stories of circular economy business models are presented. Chapter 8 investigates how to measuring effectiveness and impact of circular economy products and processes. In particular how reliable some facts are which are used by many to sell products or introduce new policies or legislation. How trustworthy is data from life cycle assessments (LCA’s)? What are the pitfalls? Is it possible to manipulate these data? Why should we characterize one-sided data from an LCA as greenwashing? Circular Economy principles, sustainability and, in broader sense, the climate discussion seem to trigger emotions. Using fundamental and reliable data is essential in order to be able to judge whether a product or process indeed reduces CO2 emissions is essential in decision-making. Chapter 9 focusses on how universities can contribute to sustainable solutions by presenting different cases which resulted in actual results which were implemented or are ready for upscaling. The role of universities as innovation hubs is highlighted through case studies with proven impact. The final chapter offers a reflective and forward-looking analysis on how circular strategies in healthcare can shape future societal developments. The authors reflect on the content in chapter 10. A final part in which a critical analysis is presented and the impact it could have on future developments and the society.

Byzantium & Friends | 84. On writing narrative history, with guest-host Marion Kruse Thursday Dec 29, 2022

In this end-of-the-year episode, guest host Marion Kruse (University of Cincinnati) interviews me about writing narrative history. Why and how should we write narrative histories? What do they accomplish in the overall economy of the scholarly production of knowledge? What pitfalls did I identify in writing my new history of Byzantium, and how did I try to avoid falling into them? (Apologies for the self-indulgent length of this episode. I was too busy talking and didn't keep good track of the time.)
