Cambridge Debate (Educational Format)

Debating in Cambridge-style is an exercise that trains students to craft arguments in a formal and concise manner. Although quite challenging, the Cambridge-debate should be doable already for first-year students of Bachelor’s. The debate is an effective way of developing broad academic skills such as argumentation, communication, critical thinking. Students will work in groups, they get half an hour to prepare and will have to speak up for at least 30 seconds each individually. The function of the Cambridge-debate is twofold. Firstly, it is a good practice in arguing about ethical questions. Secondly, it helps oneself to inhabit somebody else’s position. This comes with the advantage that students do need to have strong opinions themselves, as they are assigned either the pro or con position by the teacher, regardless of their preferences. The exercise is about practicing good argumentation, not about who is right. The Cambridge-style debate is suitable for virtually every possible ethical topic, as long as several strong propositions to discuss have been formulated beforehand by the instructor.

Introduction to Aerospace Structures and Materials

This book provides an introduction to the discipline of aerospace structures and materials. It is the first book to date that includes all relevant aspects of this discipline within a single monologue. These aspects range from materials, manufacturing and processing techniques, to structures, design principles and structural performance, including aspects like durability and safety. With the purpose of introducing students into the basics of the entire discipline, the book presents the subjects broadly and loosely connected, adopting either a formal description or an informal walk around type of presentation. A key lessons conveyed within this book is the interplay between the exact science and engineering topics, like solid material physics and structural analysis, and the soft topics that are not easily captured by equations and formulas. Safety, manufacturability, availability and costing are some of these topics that are presented in this book to explain decisions and design solutions within this discipline.

Prof. Mary Beckman | Radboud Honorary Doctorate

To order a paper copy of this book, please follow this link: https://www.boekenbestellen.nl/shop/external?P=65398&EX=25280 On October 17, 2023, during the 100th Dies Natalis of Radboud University, Mary Beckman received an honorary doctorate from Radboud University. This doctorate was awarded in recognition of her innumerable contributions to the field of linguistics. This edition includes, among other things, honorary promotor Mirjam Ernestus’ laudatio, Mary Beckman’s acceptance speech, and a detailed recollection of Beckman’s professional history. Mary Beckman made an impact early in her career by launching the Conference on Laboratory Phonology together with John Kingston, which was instrumental in the process of unifying research into the formal system of speech and research into the physical properties of speech. She then went on to co-create the ToBI system for prosody transcription, which allows researchers from many different fields to work and collaborate on speech research. Her academic contributions have fundamentally altered the course of speech research by synthesizing numerous different areas of research that once seemed incompatible. Honorary promotor Mirjam Ernestus, professor of psycholinguistics: “It is a great honor that someone with these qualities and achievements and who has materialized all the principles that we find important at Radboud University has agreed to become an honorary doctor at our university.”

Foundations of General Relativity: From Einstein to Black Holes

This book, dedicated to Roger Penrose, is a second, mathematically oriented course in general relativity. It contains extensive references and occasional excursions in the history and philosophy of gravity, including a relatively lengthy historical introduction. The book is intended for all students of general relativity of any age and orientation who have a background including at least first courses in special and general relativity, differential geometry, and topology. The material is developed in such a way that through the last two chapters the reader may acquire a taste of the modern mathematical study of black holes initiated by Penrose, Hawking, and others, as further influenced by the initial-value or PDE approach to general relativity. Successful readers might be able to begin reading research papers on black holes, especially in mathematical physics and in the philosophy of physics. The chapters are: Historical introduction, General differential geometry, Metric differential geometry, Curvature, Geodesics and causal structure, The singularity theorems of Hawking and Penrose, The Einstein equations, The 3+1 split of space-time, Black holes I: Exact solutions, and Black holes II: General theory. These are followed by two appendices containing background on Lie groups, Lie algebras, & constant curvature, and on Formal PDE theory. 4 October 2022: as of today the second edition has been published online and in print. Further research and a meeting with Roger Penrose prompted the author to expand the material about the Hole Argument, Penrose’s 1965 theorem, and Cosmic Censorship. This changed the preambles to Chapters 6 and 10, as well as §§1.5, 6.1, 7.5, 7.6, 10.4, 10.5. He also added new sections 5.11 & 7.8. Klaas Landsman (1963) has been a professor of mathematical physics since 2001, initially at the University of Amsterdam and since 2004 at Radboud University, where he is a founding member of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics (IMAPP). He was a postdoc at the University of Cambridge from 1989-1997, and a research fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) from 1997—2002. He has been an elected member of the KNAW since 2019. His previous Open Access books include Foundations of Quantum Theory (2017) and The Challenge of Chance (2016). He also wrote two popular science books in Dutch. In 2020 he won the international FQXi essay contest on Undecidability, Uncomputability, and Unpredictability.

Actor analysis, step 1 and 2

Example to explain the steps: Wind at Sea’. Step 1: The problem formulation of the client is taken as a point of departure. Very straightforward, e.g. money issues, intermittent production, … Step 2: Making an inventory of the actors. By using basic modelling techniques taught in the principles of policy analysis course. By using your preliminary causal diagram or systems diagram and by asking two questions. Which actors can actually influence important factors in my system? Who has an interest in the problem and/or is affected by possible solutions? 2 I’s: Influence and Interest: two tools to identify actors involved in an issue. Other method: Looking at the formal positions in a decision making process. Who has a role in formal decision making? Reputation and snowballing Social participation: who is active in this field or society? Who are the vocal people, the opinion leaders? Demographic characteristics Important to remember: Problem owner is an actor too and there can be more powerful actors than your problem owner. Reduce your long list of actors: stakeholder analysis. (with power/interest grid) For information on the shortlisted actors you have to do research. Desk research to start with, but maybe also by interviewing people

Byzantium & Friends | 113. The emperor’s clothing and public appearances, with Maria Parani Thursday Mar 21, 2024

A conversation with Maria Parani (University of Cyprus) on the emperor's clothing and the staging of his public appearances. We talk about his most formal garments, what he wore on the battlefield, his military banner, how he changed, and much more. Maria has published many studies of this topic, which you can find on her Academia.edu page, including "Clothes maketh the emperor? Embodying and Performing Imperial Ideology in Byzantium through Dress"; "Cultural Identity and Dress: The Case of Late Byzantine Ceremonial Costume"; and "‘Rise like the sun, the God-inspired kingship’: Light-symbolism and the Uses of Light in Middle and Late Byzantine Imperial Ceremonials."

Quantitative Research Methods I

This course is designed for the first year bachelor students business and economics. It is in the line of our learning goal "academic core", teaching mathematical thinking and working. During this course students get acquainted with a number of important mathematical topics and some basic quantitative tools for business and economics. These tools are not only relevant in an academic research setting, but also help to solve business and economics problems (Bridging theory and practice – knowledge). You will not only learn the techniques as such, but you will also learn the art of abstraction from a real-world problem to problem, and back from a formal answer to a real-world answer (Bridging theory and practice – application).
