Open Access Publishing (Leiden University & LUMC)

Leiden University and the LUMC are committed Open Science and the National Open Science Plan. Both institutions consider Open Access (OA) publishing a priority and expect you to publish your scholarly articles as openly as possible. We aim to encourage OA publishing by making it simple and feasible in every discipline. Making research publications OA allows society as a whole to benefit from Leiden University and LUMC research output and increases the visibility of your publications and the research you are performing. You may be thinking of writing up your research findings into an article, or perhaps you already have a manuscript ready to submit to a journal. In either case, you want to make sure that you make the right choices for your publication. In this module we explain what OA means, what your OA options are, and where you can find the information you need to make the best choice for your publication.

Workshop Recognition and Rewards

The interactive workshop Recognition and Rewards focuses on the impact of recognition and rewards on the choices made within research regarding Open Science principles. It is notable that, in the current system, Open Science-related tasks receive less recognition and appreciation than 'traditional' research tasks. The workshop demonstrates how the societal impact of research can change through a cultural shift regarding recognition and rewards for Open Science tasks.

Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Writing responsibly with AI

As a student, Generative AI tools can be useful in your writing process, e.g. as a feedback provider, sparring partner or editor. But doing so requires that you carefully weigh what the impact of AI on your work will be, and whether you are not delegating steps / processes to the AI that are essential to your work. The Wageningen and Radboud University Writing Labs developed these guidelines on how to write responsibly with AI. In the document you will find these guidelines, with examples of how to retain ownership over your writing product when incorporating AI into your writing process.

If you're going to be a writer, it's best to find yourself in a place where there's plenty to write about, and fifteenth-century Italy was definitely one of those places. This week, Danièle speaks with David Marsh about Leon Battista Alberti's life and writing, in and around the great figures of fifteenth-century Italy. The Medieval Podcast | Romanos the Melodist with Thomas Arentzen

This week, Daniele speaks with Thomas Arentzen about the life and works of Romanos the Melodist, why his work is so important to the history of Christianity, and how this legendary lyricist wrote about women.
