An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Playing Perspectives - a game design toolkit

Students collectively design a game on a polarizing topic and are stimulated to explore and gain a deeper understanding of various perspectives and presuppositions (including their own), recognize rhetorical narratives and frames, and devise strategies to overcome these. Students adopt active listening skills when conversing with one another. Playing Perspectives is based on game-based and transformative learning principles. Playing Perspectives consists of three phases. These can be conducted consecutively or separate from one another as stand alone activities, depending on the time available, your learning objectives and the desire to have a playable game as end product. The materials that are developed by students in each of these phases can be uploaded onto Edusources and used by other teachers if they only want to conduct one of the later phases as stand alone activity. Playing Perspectives was developed as part of the Utrecht University Comenius project Fostering an Open Mind and Open Attitude in Higher Education that strives to stimulate perspective taking and dialogue in academic education with creative learning activities. The other learning activities that have been developed as part of the Open Minds project are the Open Mind digital game and The Square (Het Vlak; a creative dialogue methodology). Please note: the photos required for phase 1 can be downloaded from the Teaching & Learning Collection of the UU (see links).

Open Education general workshop (2024)

The latest version of our Open Educational Resources workshop, presented by the University of Groningen Library and Education Support and Innovation Department. This workshops lasts roughly 2,5 hours, and tackles the five basic OER compentencies as outlined by the UNESCO (Familiarity, Finding, Using, Creating, Sharing OER). The workshop is primarily meant for teachers looking to broadly familiarize themselves with the topic of Open Education and Open Educational Resources. The slides include a number of group discussion questions and assignments for participants to follow. For the quiz assignment, a link to the Google Form with the quiz is present. Making a private copy of the form is needed to ensure others do not change it. For the assignment on the benefits of Open Education, the playing cards for the OE game created by the European Network for Open Education Librarians (ENOEL) are needed. The powerpoint with these paying cards is also included.

Search methods & techniques: Get the most out of Google Scholar

Get the most out of Google Scholar Google Scholar is a suite of tools for scholars. You can use it to search for scholarly publications, mainly journal articles, and access e-content in publisher’s websites, academic repositories, and libraries. Customize Google Scholar to connect to the library’s resources Customize your Google Scholar settings to link to the Erasmus University Library’s collection. Export citations to RefWorks Manually collecting the information you need to create correct references can be a lot of work. There are tools available, called reference managers, to make this easier. Advanced search The Advanced Search in Google Scholar gives you more control over your search to find more relevant results by using filters and other parameters. Search methods & techniques: Google vs library resources?

Should I be using Google or the library resources? Unfortunately, it’s not simply a matter of choosing one or the other. Internet search engines like Google can search billions of public web pages for your keywords in seconds, but they cannot access proprietary data. Google vs PsycINFO Why do you have to use an academic database, like Scopus or PsycINFO? Is Google Scholar, a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature, not enough? To let you experience the differences between Google Scholar and academic database, an example. Related.

Search methods & techniques: Use sEURch

What is sEURch? sEURch is the library's own search engine. A search in sEURch returns journal articles, books, book chapters, journals, etc. Find a journal article in sEURch There are times when you already know the article you are looking for because you have a reference. Use sEURch to look for literature by subject In addition to tracing books and journal articles that you have references for, sEURch is ideal for discovering articles on a topic. Not in our library. Where else can you find it? If a book or journal article is not in the collection of the EUR University Library, there are a few options. Related. Suggested.

The European Experience

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.
