Water-Filled Glass as a Heat Displacement System for Saving Energy in Buildings

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Brandon Mok introduces Water-filled Glass (WFG), a technology that replaces the gas in an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) with a water layer connected to a mechanical system with a heat exchanger and pump. The core function is to manage a building's energy demand by controlling the water temperature to optimize the glass surface temperature, thereby reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Studies show WFG can provide 47-72% better energy savings than double glazing and 34-61% better than triple glazing. The presentation further explores a novel concept called SEED (Saving Energy through Energy Distribution), which uses the WFG system to redistribute heat from building facades requiring cooling to those requiring heating simultaneously. A preliminary simulation for office buildings in London and New York showed that WFG alone achieved 58-72% energy savings, with the SEED concept providing an additional 10-13% in savings by balancing energy demands across different orientations. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Brandon Mok for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Come to Your Senses

Seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, feeling. After early education, sensory skills are rarely trained directly, but most professionals naturally develop them with practice. Come to Your Senses provides direct exercises that will help sharpen your and your students’ senses so that they can utilize them in their professional and personal lives. Senses-based learning is a pedagogical methodology that focuses on exploring and developing sensory awareness and skills, and critically reflecting on their importance in education, research and professional practice. Based on the research carried out at Maastricht University between 2021 and 2024, Emilie Sitzia, Elene Kadagidze and Tânia A. Cardoso show how to use your senses in a fun, visual manner. From Cookie Explosions and Visual Journalism to Sensory Mapping, with unique exercises different experts this guide demonstrates how to implement senses-based learning in your classes or everyday life. This open textbook functions as a manual on how to implement senses-based learning within and outside academia. Come to Your Senses re-balances and reasserts the importance of sensory skills in tertiary education and professional practice through interventions in the existing curriculum in the form of designed learning units, learning resources and activities.

An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.
