Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Abiotic stress

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces abiotic stress in plants and explains how plants cope with and adapt to challenging environmental conditions. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers key abiotic stresses - heat, cold, flooding, drought, salinity, and high light intensity - and examines the physiological, structural, and adaptive strategies plants use to survive and grow under these conditions.

Educational resources for Object Based Teaching and Learning

This collection consists of several educational resources pertaining to teaching with objects. These resources aim to support you in getting started with the numerous ways that objects can be implemented in education and to inspire you in creating your own version of these lesson plans. Every publication below includes documents with instructions and (a link to) the specific object that is used in the lesson plan. Some of the educational resources are linked to a digitized clay tablet. If this is the case, the publication of that resource will include a link to that digitized clay tablet. Moreover, the links & downloads underneath present you with a guide that presents several practical methods of Object Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) linked to the learning objectives to which they cater. The guide includes numerous links to articles and case studies. In addition, you’ll find some information pages on OBTL as a didactical theory and its implementation at the VU.

Sci-Fi storyline mapping starting from writing prompts

In this hands-on group-based activity, students work in small groups (3-4 members) to draft a science fiction storyline, namely the main actions happening in it, through a guided step-by-step activity. The exercise aims to reflect on technological innovation and the societal impact of a technology by fostering narrative imagination and through this process, expanding one’s moral imagination about technological innovations.

Virtues

A virtue is an excellent character trait or quality, such as courage, honesty and creativity. Virtues are expressed in action, and practice is essential: just as you need to practice drawing in order to become a designer, you need to practice in acting virtuously in order to cultivate virtues. To truly ‘possess’ a virtue means it is deeply ingrained in your personality – you cannot have half a virtue. A courageous person is not just occasionally courageous. A person who sometimes keeps his promise does not have the virtue of trustworthiness.

Toxicology, an open online textbook

This open online textbook on Environmental Toxicology aims at covering the field in its full width, including aspects of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, toxicology and risk assessment. With that, it will contribute to improving the quality, continuity and transparency of the education in environmental toxicology. We also want to make sure that fundamental insights on fate and effects of chemicals gained in the past are combined with recent approaches of effect assessment and molecular analysis of mechanisms causing toxicity. The book contains tools for self-study and training, like a (limited) number of questions at the end of each module. For the future we foresee the addition of separate exercises and other tools that may help the student in understanding the theory. To guarantee quality of the book, each module was reviewed by at least one of the members of the project team but also by an international reviewer from outside the project team (see List of reviewers). An advisory board and a steering committee were involved in supervising the project, as well as educational advisors, while the project team served as an editorial board.
