Collage-making for self-discovery in engineering ethics

This creative exercise enables students to discover, reflect and express their emotions in relation to engineering. In this way, the exercise enables self-understanding through an encounter with one’s own feelings and intuitions and serves as a starting point for better ethical deliberation and well-being. Learning goals: • Expanding moral sensibility (being aware of their own emotions, values and norms) • Stimulating moral creativity and imagination

EPIFFANI Project Results

These are the combined results for the EPIFFANI Project by Prof. Nicolas Mangin. This project was funded buy SURF's Stimuleringsregeling open en online onderwijs. The aim of the project was to build and test a set of four open source applications for R/integration into the LMS, which allowed teachers to easily automate formative testing through IT solutions. With these applications, teachers can easily and quickly create automate the processing of making tests with personalized feedback for students. The results have three elements: A full project report, which provides context for the creation and creation process A link to Youtube video demonstration of the tools, made for the University of Groningen's education festival 2022 A link to the Github page of project lead Nicolas Mangin. On this page, all the packages can be downloaded, and documentation and instruction are available All tools are licensed under a GPL-3 license, but as this license is not available, it has been noted as CC BY-SA here.

Pressure Cooker Travelling Concepts

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to travelling concepts as an integrative research methodology. Travelling concepts can be used for comparing disciplinary notes and for synthesizing purposes in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, and research. Participants practice integration per se as well as travelling concepts itself. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a class of students (all levels; any group size) as well as a team of educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in, for instance, travelling concepts improves the actual working with, or teaching of, it. How long – In-class activities take under two hours. Preparation at home takes up two hours.

Tutorial: Research portfolio

Define what a scientific poster is and its role in academic and professional settings. Recognize the standard sections of a scientific poster, including title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and references. Understand the purpose of each section and its role in conveying research findings effectively. Explain the principles of visual hierarchy and how it guides the viewer's attention. Explore various layout options for organizing content logically and coherently. Summarize research findings succinctly without sacrificing essential information. Recognize the role of visual elements in making complex concepts more accessible to the audience. Recognize the importance of providing proper credit to sources and collaborators. Understand ethical considerations related to data presentation and research transparency. Understand the logistics of presenting a poster at conferences or events.

Doing the literature review: Using a database thesaurus

Using a database thesaurus A thesaurus is a list of terms used in databases to give consistent labels to articles which describe the same concept, but in a variety of ways. What is a thesaurus? A thesaurus is a list of terms, structured hierarchically, showing.... broader - more general terms, narrower - more specific term, and related terms. You will also see ‘Use for’ terms: they can be useful to translate ‘lay terms’ into scholarly terms. Example: thesaurus terms in databases Muller, F., van Zoonen, L., & de Roode, L. (2008). The integrative power of sport: Imagined and real effects of sport events on multicultural integration. Sociology of Sport Journal, 25(3), 387-401. Exercise: Using a database thesaurus. Related. The European Experience

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.

Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams

The Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams is an ongoing project that seeks to compile all metrical poems in Byzantine manuscripts that self-reference the book in which they are found. The database currently has over 12,000 “occurrence” records that include the text of the epigrams and information on the manuscripts in which they are found. Occurrences are linked to “type” records that group identical or similar epigrams preserved in different manuscripts. There is a catalog searchable by occurrence, type, manuscripts, and people. There is also a substantial bibliography on Byzantine epigrams provided.

Heuristic Trees as a Digital Tool to Foster Compressionand Decompression in Problem‑Solving

This design-based study addresses the issue of how to digitally support students’problem-solving by providing heuristics, in the absence of the teacher. The problemis that, so far, digital tutoring systems lack the ability to diagnose students’ needsin open problem situations. Our approach is based on students’ ability to self-diag-nose and find help. To this purpose, we introduce a new type of digital, interactive,help-seeking tool called a heuristic tree. Students’ use of this tool is supported by ahelp-seeking flowchart. The design of heuristic trees is based on our reinterpretationof the notion of heuristic in terms of terms of compression. Our research questionis: How do heuristic trees and the help-seeking flowchart influence students’ prob-lem-solving behaviour? This question was studied in the context of a number theorycourse for in-service mathematics teachers. During five weeks, fifty students workedon fifty-five problems supported by heuristic trees. Our data consists of video obser-vations of two small groups of students, a teacher log, interviews with these twogroups, and a survey filled in by twenty-three students. The main results are that thesupport by heuristic trees and the help-seeking flowchart allows students to work inthe absence of a teacher and to engage strongly with problems, maintaining owner-ship of the solution methods. Moreover, as intended by the tree structure, studentslearned to focus not just on the small steps of the solutions, but also on the generalheuristic techniques, theorems, and concepts that should be learned in the process offinding those solutions.
