Scholingstraject AI-geletterdheid (UBVU)

Maintaining Classroom Management

In this report, the design of a blueprint for learning classroom management is presented. This program will be designed for pre-service lower secondary school teachers in the Netherlands (age group 11 to 16-year-old students; 2e graads in Dutch). These teachers are completing a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area and take a six-month minor in which they receive pedagogical and didactical training to be prepared for teaching in secondary schools. This minor is accompanied by an internship in which the pre-service teachers put their skills into practice.Although the minor allots extensive attention to classroom management, teachers often struggle to manage both class and content. This is understandable as, although classroom management can be learned with the right amount of practice and support, mastery of classroom management skills takes around four years on average takes. To guide pre-service teachers well on their way towards mastering classroom management, a rigorous and evidence-based approach to teaching classroom management to pre-service teachers is needed. An evidence-based approach should allow for a productive and enjoyable learning process for pre-service teachers. One well-studied approach is found in the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model which offers an evidence-based approach to teaching complex skills. This paper adapts the 4C/ID model and applies it to the skill of classroom management for pre-service teachers in the Netherlands.

Systematic review as a research method

A systematic review is a research method used to answer a very specific research question. Scoping reviews ask broader questions such as “What is already known about certain practices/theories etc.?” In this workshop you will learn more about: • Different types of reviews • Phases and stages of a review • Tools for your review process. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Search for systematic reviews on your own research topic. Select at least one systematic review and one other type of review. • Read the method section of the articles you have found. Use the PRISMA checklist to evaluate on the authors' method. What items of the method are according to PRISMA, and which items are you missing? You're also invited to take a look at the workshop "Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers" It'll give you a great foundation before moving on to the workshop about systematic review as a research method. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up a good systematic review in order to find relevant literature.

Genetics for Everyone

Genetics is one of the fastest developing areas of natural sciences, which brings more and more knowledge and important information to our society. This information reaches us through scientists, physicians and other experts in the form of prenatal diagnostics, the latest trends in the field of healthy living, new possibilities for personalised disease therapy, modern methods in criminology etc. The correct understanding of scientific and technical procedures, which include personalised medicine or the use of genetically modified organisms, places increasing demands on every member of modern society. The rational response of all of us to the challenges associated with these technologies, as to the understanding of global pandemics or the climate crisis, thus requires an increasingly strong voice of educated experts and a cultured dialogue between experts and the public. The effort of today's educational institutions to provide quality information is additionally complicated by the spread of fake news, hoaxes and the distortion of reality by non-expert Internet debaters. If our interest is to teach people to critically accept the information that directly affects them and not to be swayed by half-truths and conspiracy theories, a strong foundation in genetics is a necessity today. This book is intended for teachers of biology students, students of biological and non-biological fields, as well as those interested in genetics from the public. Its aim is to bring the basic genetic principles and discoveries closer together and to discuss them in the context of current events. The book also provides information on the use of knowledge from genetics in other fields, including medicine, criminology, pharmacy and history.

Learning objectives minor Science, Technology & Innovation: Biomimicry

The learning objectives of the Biomimicry minor blend theoretical understanding with practical skills. Students engage with a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, gaining a comprehensive grasp of biomimicry principles. Practical objectives emphasize hands-on experiences, where students apply these principles through advanced prototyping techniques such as CAD, 3D printing, and microcontroller programming. The course aims to enhance students’ abilities to think critically and solve problems creatively, preparing them to design and execute bio-inspired projects. Additionally, the program nurtures team collaboration and communication skills, essential for articulating project insights to diverse audiences, and managing long-term, complex projects effectively.

Information literacy framework

The Information Literacy Framework formulates learning outcomes, developed by HAN study centres. When is someone "information literate" and what training is needed at various levels to acquire the relevant skills? Three levels are distinguished A Basic (general) B Advanced (task-oriented) C Final (graduation phase/practice-based research). The stated learning outcomes were tested using the Tuning Guide. A Dutch version is available. The title is: 'Raamwerk Informatievaardigheden'.
