Elements of Airplane Performance

Elements of Airplane Performance provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles governing the flight performance of fixed-wing aircraft. After covering fundamental concepts related to atmospheric properties, equations of motion, aerodynamics, propeller and jet propulsion, electric powertrains, and flight instrumentation, the book guides its readers through the analysis of performance in steady and accelerated flight. Detailed chapters are dedicated to the most important flight phases: climb and descent (including gliding), cruise, take-off and landing, turning and maneuvering flight. Both point and path performance are covered, and the effect of aircraft design parameters, as well as operational parameters like weight, altitude, and local atmospheric conditions, are discussed. Appendices offer essential background in mechanics, coordinate systems and transformations, fluid dynamics, and a standard atmosphere model. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter.

Lateral Load Resistance of Glass Pane According to EN 16612

In this video, Martina Eliášová introduces the European standard EN 16612 for determining the lateral load resistance of glass panes used as infill panels in windows and facades. The standard provides design procedures for monolithic, laminated, or insulated glass that is simply supported around its edges and subjected to uniform loads like wind or thermal stress. The design follows the limit state method, which includes checking the Ultimate Limit State (to prevent collapse by ensuring design tensile stress is less than the design glass strength) and the Serviceability Limit State (to control deformation). A key aspect is the use of partial safety factors, where design loads are increased and material strengths are reduced. The design bending strength of glass is significantly influenced by the load duration (through the Kmod factor), the edge condition (Ke factor), and the glass surface profile (Ksp factor), with specific characteristic strength values and adjustment factors provided for different glass types like annealed and pre-stressed glass. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Adhesive Connections in Glass Constructions

In this video, Christiane Kothe explains the use of structural adhesive bonding in glass construction, a technology with ancient roots that was revolutionized by modern synthetic and silicone adhesives. Adhesive connections offer key advantages over mechanical fixings, including transparent aesthetics, the ability to join different materials, and even stress distribution, which reduces local weak points. However, their success depends on meticulous surface preparation and managing long curing times, which can impact production efficiency. The video covers the fundamental principles of adhesion and cohesion, the chemical curing process of structural adhesives, and the critical importance of surface pre-treatments to ensure bond strength and long-term durability. Through methods like contact angle measurement and mechanical testing, including accelerated aging, the performance and reliability of these bonds can be validated. When applied correctly, adhesive connections significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and design possibilities of modern glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Christiane Kothe for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
