Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Understanding Glass Codes and Standards

In this video, Martina Eliášová outlines the critical role of codes and standards in the use of structural glass in modern architecture. As glass evolves from a simple infill material to a primary structural element in beams, columns, and load-bearing walls, ensuring safety becomes paramount. The framework has evolved from national standards to unified European Eurocodes, which harmonize design, manufacturing, and testing rules across the EU to ensure quality and safety. The key groups of standards cover glass production, material property determination (e.g., EN 1288, EN 16612), and the design of load-bearing structures (with the upcoming EN 19100). Essential testing standards are also outlined, including those for impact resistance from human bodies (EN 12600), manual burglary attacks (EN 356), and resistance to firearms and explosions, all necessary to meet the reliability and safety requirements for building structures throughout their service life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Maker Lab Lecture Slides and Lecture Announcements

This collection of the Maker Lab's Lecture Slides and Lecture Announcements (alongside the Lecture Notes and several Assignments files) detail the learning material and activities that prepare students for the open inquiry phases. Specifically, students learn about experimental design and uncertainty analysis, and learn and practice some important programming skills for controlling sensors and processing and analyzing data. For context of how these lectures fit into the course activities, please see the example course schedule (published as a sub-page of the main "Maker Lab: full course materials" page). The Lecture Slides are .PDF files of the Powerpoint slides, while the .TXT documents are pre- or post-lecture announcements posted to the course's digital learning environment. The course runs over 15 teaching weeks, with two 90 minute class sessions per week ("a" and "b"), which explains the naming system of these files, with names that begin with the week number and session letter. Note that many class sessions (especially after the open inquiry phases begin in session 5b) have no lectures or other materials because they are devoted to students' team presentations or individual meetings between teams and instructor. Additionally, lectures 1b and 2a include exercises and discussions using Arduino code files, with the file extensions .INO, which are also included here. NOTE: These uploads are not yet working. Please reach out if you're interested in the files. NOTE: Instructors interested in having the original powerpoint files of the Lecture Slides are encouraged to reach out to me via forrestbradbury ("AT") gmail.com .

Environmental Ethics: The Advent of the Wolf

The emerging wolves overpopulation in the Netherlands has been a much-discussed subject in the last years and as such provides a concrete ethical case to think about. In this CBE, students will perform a roleplay. They will imagine being one of five shareholders in a consideration of the ethical question of whether to shoot wolves disturbing agriculture in the Netherlands.
