Introduction to data management as part of Open Science

Data management is part of the research cycle. It is crucial to think about it in the design phase of any experiment. This self-study module gives you hands on advice on what to do (and what NOT) with research data. It is not about (statistical) data analysis. This self-study module helps students get familiar with setting up their data management plan. As it’s an introduction to this topic, it is for students at beginner level. After completing this self-study module, you should be able to answer the following questions: What do I store? Where do I store? How can others understand what I stored? Why should I care?

High Sensitivity: Brain, Mental Health and Society | Radboud Reflects Lecture with Corina Greven and Judith Homberg

What is High Sensitivity? An estimated 1 in 5 people identify as highly sensitive. Is there an increase? What happens in the brain of a highly sensitive person? How does high sensitivity affect mental health? And if there’s an increase, what does that say about our society? Learn from psychologist Corina Greven and neuroscientist Judith Homberg, and learn more about high sensitivity, the brain and society. High Sensitivity: Brain, Mental Health and Society | Lecture and conversation with psychologist Corina Greven and neuroscientist Judith Homberg | Thursday, 16 April 2026 | 20.00 - 21.30 hrs | Lecture Hall Complex, Radboud University | Radboud Reflects and Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour Have a look at the recap: ++www.ru.nl/en/services/sport-cu…ntist-judith-homberg++

The Price of Inequality | Radboud Reflects Lecture with Édouard Louis, Maaike Koffeman, Francesco Cerchiaro and Eddie Denessen

What does it mean to grow up in an environment where violence and alcohol abuse are the norm? What is it like for a child when everyone around you is unemployed, racist and homophobic? Especially when you yourself are intelligent, sensitive and queer? This is the story of writer and sociologist Édouard Louis, who managed to break free from his background and continues to fight against it on every page of his books. Listen to Édouard Louis conversating with literary scholar Maaike Koffeman, sociologist Francesco Cerchiaro and educationalist Eddie Denessen and ask your own questions!

Measure Sustainability: LCA

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and its specific application to glass products. The LCA is a standardized process that evaluates a product's environmental impact from raw material extraction ("cradle") to final disposal ("grave"). The assessment follows four phases: defining the goal and scope, conducting a life cycle inventory, assessing the environmental impacts, and interpreting the results. For construction products like glass, the life cycle is divided into modules covering production, use, end-of-life, and potential benefits from recycling. The findings of an LCA are often published in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a verified document that communicates transparent environmental data. For flat glass, the manufacturing stage is the most environmentally intensive, contributing the vast majority to its global warming potential due to the high energy required to melt raw materials. Increasing the use of recycled glass cullet is a key strategy for reducing this impact, as it significantly lowers the energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions of the melting process. Understanding LCA is crucial for identifying environmental hotspots and driving more sustainable practices in glass production and use. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Float Glass: Primary Glass Manufactoring and Mechanical Properties

In this video Mauro Overend explains the well-known properties of glass and how they result from its manufacturing process. Glass is an optically transparent but brittle material, making it ideal for architecture yet prone to sudden breakage. The video focuses on the industrial float glass process, invented by Alastair Pilkington in the 1950s. This process involves melting raw materials like silica sand, soda, and lime at 1500°C. The molten glass is then floated on a bath of molten tin, where it cools and solidifies into a flat uniform sheet. This rapid, controlled cooling results in an "amorphous isotropic solid," which gives glass its transparency, perfect elasticity, and brittleness. The glass is then annealed (gradually cooled) to minimize internal stresses, making it possible to cut. The final product, known as annealed float glass, is the base material for most architectural applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Mauro Overend for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
