Clinical Tools: A DIY catalogue for the creative

Instead of encouraging the purchasing of new technologies for medical training, this textbook, in the form of a catalogue, focuses on sharing examples of creative tools that already exist. This issue also offers a practical guide for how to make these tools, encouraging using local resources. Ever considered where your learning tools come from as you study or teach medicine? So many teaching materials in medicine are mass-produced, environmentally unfriendly, and reproduce the same kind of bodies. We need a drastic rethinking of our teaching tools. But rather than new inventions, what if the innovations we need are already out there? Our first issue of Clinical Tools: A DIY Catalogue for the Creative celebrates the abundance of ideas for teaching materials that already exist in medical education. Inside you will find gorgeous illustrations, clear instructions for how to make tools and insightful essays exploring the ideas behind DIY in medical education. Get your making supplies ready! This open textbook is designed for nursing, medical and other healthcare students and teachers across bachelor’s, undergraduate and postgraduate, master’s level, especially those enrolled in courses on clinical training. It is also relevant to other practitioners and learners working in healthcare contexts who continue to engage in educational activities. The textbook is intended to help students learn about and create their own teaching tools, whether they are working in obstetrics, surgery, or general medicine. The book supports learning by doing: students and teachers can read and adapt the instructions, use the included suggestions, and connect to what is available and relevant in their own healthcare contexts. It is also suitable for instructors seeking accessible, reusable teaching material that can be integrated into classroom teaching, assignments, and research-led education across healthcare education settings.

Learning Cycle Toolbox

The Learning Cycle Toolbox supports students and teachers in self‑regulated learning through a set of concise, practical tools aligned with every phase of the learning cycle. Originally developed for Maastricht University’s medical curriculum, it now serves as an easy‑to‑use resource for any SRL-promoting higher‑education context. The tools align with the phases and steps of the (self‑regulated) learning cycle (Plan – Act – Look Back) and can be used independently by students or initiated by the teacher. Additional sets of tools are included to offer structure for student team meetings and one‑on‑one coaching sessions. All tools are brief, practical, and easy to apply – no long texts. This toolbox is designed to help students strengthen their self‑regulated learning (SRL) skills. It also serves as a useful resource for teachers who support students in developing SRL. Although it was originally created for Maastricht University’s medical curriculum, it may also inspire use in other higher‑education contexts where SRL is encouraged. Because tools work best when tailored to their specific setting, the current materials are intentionally fit for purpose. However, they can be easily adapted for use in other educational environments.

Dear Reader, Welcome to Sustainable EU Economy. This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. In this way, you may explore the EU not only as a historical and political project, but also as a dynamic economic system that continually reshapes business strategy, trade, and innovation. Playing Perspectives - a game design toolkit

Students collectively design a game on a polarizing topic and are stimulated to explore and gain a deeper understanding of various perspectives and presuppositions (including their own), recognize rhetorical narratives and frames, and devise strategies to overcome these. Students adopt active listening skills when conversing with one another. Playing Perspectives is based on game-based and transformative learning principles. Playing Perspectives consists of three phases. These can be conducted consecutively or separate from one another as stand alone activities, depending on the time available, your learning objectives and the desire to have a playable game as end product. The materials that are developed by students in each of these phases can be uploaded onto Edusources and used by other teachers if they only want to conduct one of the later phases as stand alone activity. Playing Perspectives was developed as part of the Utrecht University Comenius project Fostering an Open Mind and Open Attitude in Higher Education that strives to stimulate perspective taking and dialogue in academic education with creative learning activities. The other learning activities that have been developed as part of the Open Minds project are the Open Mind digital game and The Square (Het Vlak; a creative dialogue methodology). Please note: the photos required for phase 1 can be downloaded from the Teaching & Learning Collection of the UU (see links).
