Constructive, Collaborative, Contextual, and Self-Directed Learning

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has shaped education at Maastricht University (UM) for more than five decades. Yet PBL is sometimes narrowly associated with one particular instructional format: the seven-step approach. Constructive, Collaborative, Contextual, and Self-Directed (CCCS) Learning at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) takes a broader perspective. It presents the four CCCS learning principles as a flexible set of design principles for meaningful teaching, learning, and assessment. The booklet brings together more than thirty examples from across FSE. Organised around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), the cases span educational levels from pre-university education to PhD training and cover a wide variety of formats, including tutorials, laboratories, projects, fieldwork, assessment, games, and technology-enhanced learning. Each case starts from an educational challenge, describes a concrete intervention, and reflects on the design through the CCCS lens. Readers encounter examples ranging from student-led mathematics tutorials and open-ended physics experiments to robotics projects, ecological fieldwork, co-created assessment, serious games, and authentic engineering challenges. Together, they demonstrate that student-centred learning can take many different forms while remaining academically rigorous and appropriate to the demands of STEAM education. Rather than prescribing a single method, the booklet inspires educators to rethink their own practice. It shows how CCCS learning principles can serve as a shared language for educational innovation while allowing room for disciplinary differences, creativity, co-creation, playful learning, technology, and different approaches to PBL. The collection is intended as a practical source of ideas for teachers, course coordinators, programme directors, educational developers, and University Teaching Qualification participants within Maastricht University and beyond. Its central message is simple: CCCS learning is not confined to one classroom format or one disciplinary tradition; it is a versatile foundation for designing engaging and meaningful higher education.

Game Development with Students

The project Game Development with Students introduces interested educators to an innovative teaching tool with practical insights from the international relations classroom. Game development with students is a specialized form of game-based and project-based learning. It incentivizes both student creativity and in-class student-teacher co-creation and enables a particularly participative and result-oriented approach to the subject matter. The method is thematically flexible enough to travel across different fields of study and is adaptable to different levels of complexity. To enable other educators to implement this innovative teaching tool, we develop instructional materials (an educators handbook as well as educational videos), providing both general information on the experiential, game-based learning theory undergirding the method as well as practical, hands-on tips and trick on how to implement it in different educational settings. In doing so, we address the important, interconnected educational challenges of the transferability and sustainability of teacher developed tools.

Self-study module Introduction to Plant Biology - Plant hormones

This self-study module is part of the series ‘Introduction to Plant Biology’ and introduces plant hormones, explaining how chemical signaling enables communication and coordination within plants. It is designed for students learning basic plant biology and for teachers seeking clear figures and explanations for educational use. The module covers fundamental concepts of cell signaling and signal transduction and examines the functions and interactions of major plant hormones, including auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, brassinosteroids, and strigolactones, in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to the environment.

Assessment Portfolio Boundary Crossing & Personal Leadership

This assessment portfolio is developed for use in a BSc Marine Sciences Course on Boundary Crossing and Personal Leadership (BSc Year 1). This document contains three assignments showing students' development in their boundary crossing and personal leadership skills throughout the course and the learning goals they set for themselves for the rest of the BSc program. It contains instructions for students on what to include for their assessment portfolio. This document has a supplementary document called 'Development Portfolio Boundary Crossing & Personal Leadership'. Students can use (elements of) their development portfolio (formative) for this assessment portfolio (summative).

Lessons Learned

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is one of the most widely applied computational modelling research techniques in archaeology, because it is well suited to the questions asked by archaeologists. However, the access to vocational training for ABM is limited. In this paper we present the Open Educational Resources (OER) that we produced in an international cooperation. For this purpose, we created online and open tutorials for ABM for archaeologists. In addition, how-to guides and support material were created, both for teachers and students. The materials adhere to international (European) standards in relation to education and the Digital Skills Passport for archaeology. The teaching materials have been well tested using a diverse group of archaeologists during various international conferences and meetings. It was shown that the knowledge and skills of the participants in relation to ABM improved. In addition, the demand for the teaching materials and the workshops was high, ensuring that the tutorials on ABM will be used in the future.

Systems Thinking Pressure Cooker

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to systems thinking. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a system are and have them experience various examples of using systems thinking to explore a topic or question. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with systems thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of systems thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and a 10 minutes pre-class video.

Come to Your Senses

Seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, feeling. After early education, sensory skills are rarely trained directly, but most professionals naturally develop them with practice. Come to Your Senses provides direct exercises that will help sharpen your and your students’ senses so that they can utilize them in their professional and personal lives. Senses-based learning is a pedagogical methodology that focuses on exploring and developing sensory awareness and skills, and critically reflecting on their importance in education, research and professional practice. Based on the research carried out at Maastricht University between 2021 and 2024, Emilie Sitzia, Elene Kadagidze and Tânia A. Cardoso show how to use your senses in a fun, visual manner. From Cookie Explosions and Visual Journalism to Sensory Mapping, with unique exercises different experts this guide demonstrates how to implement senses-based learning in your classes or everyday life. This open textbook functions as a manual on how to implement senses-based learning within and outside academia. Come to Your Senses re-balances and reasserts the importance of sensory skills in tertiary education and professional practice through interventions in the existing curriculum in the form of designed learning units, learning resources and activities.
