Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

AgriLemma 2.0: A serious game for exploring dilemmas in agriculture

In AgriLemma, you are a farmer in Europe managing your own farm across 8 seasons. You grow six types of crops — potatoes, sugar beets, rapeseed, corn, wheat, and chickpeas — each requiring resources such as seeds, water, nutrients, and workers. Players must run, invest in, and improve their farm with sustainable technologies while balancing competing priorities and navigating uncertainties like weather events and pest attacks. The objective is to maximize overall farm health, which is determined by three dimensions: environmental health (positive ecological impact), social health (worker satisfaction), and financial health (farm profitability). Players must strategize across all three dimensions simultaneously — decisions that boost profit may come at an environmental cost, and vice versa. The game makes these trade-offs tangible, encouraging reflection on what sustainable farming really requires. ------------------------------ Learning objectives: · Experiment with different strategies — to operationalize and adapt an approach under pressure, and to reflect on how well it held up. · Expose students to issues of risk management — to plan, control, and explain the reasoning behind in-game choices relating to sustainability, soil conservation practices, integrated crop management, weeding, and pest management, and to learn how to respond when conditions change. · Experience the complexity of decision-making — to take into account weather and policy uncertainties, sustainability pressures, economic realities, and the broader context in which farm decisions are made. --------------------------------Practical information: · Format: Board game (physical/ print-and-play) · Players: 2-4 players (extendable to 8 by playing in teams of 2) · Duration: 3 hours, including onboarding and debrief · Level: Higher education / Stakeholder engagement · Language: English --------------------------------Credits: AgriLemma was originally designed as part of the WATERAGRI project. The second version, including a full redesign of the graphics, was developed with funding support from the TU Delft Open Science Programme course "Civic Engagement in Action: Empowering Researchers and Educators to Make an Impact". Game design: Dr. ir. Aashna Mittal - TU Delft, Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management Graphic design and illustration: Gracia Bovenberg-Murris and Michelle de Smit – TU Delft GameLab Note on image generation: The images in the tech cards and the border of the main game board were created using AI-generated imagery. The constructed wetlands card image is also AI-generated. All other cards and box art are hand-drawn or created in Adobe Illustrator. Note on usability: The print-and-play version of the game has been optimized for office printing.

Modules Teaching inclusive and critical searching

This publications presents two modules, one for lecturers and one for students, on inclusive teaching and critical searching. The modules highlight how search engines and databases are far from neutral. They provide handles to critically engage with the information found on these platforms and how to pass this information on to your students. The modules can be used as an extension to information literacy courses or guides. Besides general information, the modules contain VU specific information. This information can be adjusted to other contexts.

Project Management - Balancing Planning, Coordination and Flexibility

Main Concepts Project management (in research): Planning, coordinating, and controlling a finite research project to ensure objectives are delivered on time. Agile: An iterative and flexible approach that delivers work in small cycles and adapts to feedback. Waterfall: A linear, sequential approach where each phase is completed before the next begins. The hybrid approach used at the BMS lab: A balanced method that combines Agile flexibility with Waterfall’s clear timeline and milestones. Kanban: A visual system where tickets move through stages (e.g., Design, Development, Testing, Done) to track progress. MoSCoW: A prioritization method that classifies tasks as Must-have, Should-have, Could-have, or Won’t-have. Constraints: Practical limitations such as time, budget, people, or equipment that shape what is possible. Learning Goals Define project management in a research and innovation context. Differentiate between Agile and Waterfall methods and their limitations. Apply a balanced project management strategy suited for time-bound research. Learn to use Kanban boards and MoSCoW prioritization effectively. Build a structured plan that aligns time, resources, and objectives. Key Takeaways Research projects benefit from a hybrid model — flexible like Agile but structured like Waterfall. A clear timeline, defined roles, and prioritization reduce stress and confusion. MoSCoW helps focus resources on what truly matters. Kanban visualizes progress and reveals bottlenecks early. Successful project management is about balance, communication, and adaptability. Further Exploration Search for “Agile vs Waterfall project management comparison.” Search for “Kanban board for research project tracking.” Search for “MoSCoW prioritization examples in academic projects.” Search for “hybrid project management methods in innovation research.”

The Project Intersection

Main Concepts Project Intersection: The balanced overlap between user stories (what/why), requirements (how), and constraints (when/who/with what). Points of tension: Conflicts or misalignments between design ideas, technical requirements, and project limitations. Balance / "the sweet spot" of the project intersection: The state where research goals, technical implementation, and project limits are aligned and feasible. Trade-offs: Deliberate decisions to prioritize one aspect (e.g., time, creativity, precision) while accepting limits in another. Learning Goals Understand the visual and conceptual model of the Project Intersection. Recognize points of tension between design, development and project management. Use communication and planning strategies to find a balance between over- and under-specifying Reflect on trade-offs between different perspectives. Key Takeaways The sweet spot of a project lies where user stories, requirements, and management factors meet. Over-specifying or under-specifying leads to misinterpretation and lost value. Early conversations between designers, researchers, and developers prevent imbalance. Trade-offs are normal; documenting and discussing them keeps projects transparent. A balanced intersection ensures the project is not just built — but built with purpose. Further Exploration Search for “Venn diagram project management balance” Search for “how to connect user stories and requirements” Search for “MoSCoW prioritization examples in research projects” Search for “design constraints and trade-offs in innovation”

ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

The Matter of Hospitals

This book invites readers to discover never-before-told stories of hospitals through an unusual assortment of materials, offering a unique and timely glimpse into one of society’s most feared, essential, and sensorially rich institutions. Hospitals, with their distinctive smells, acute pain, births, writhing bodies, incessant beeping, endless waiting, cardboard food and never-ending corridors, have fascinated writers for centuries. Edited by the prize-winning author of A Sensory Education and Making Sense of Medicine, this book shares a never-before-told story of hospitals through an unusual collection of objects. A great deal that matters happens in hospitals – from new life to the end of life. There is also a great deal of matter, in its material form, within hospitals. Sometimes there is too much: when we see the mountains of clinical waste with dirty syringes and used gloves. Sometimes there is too little: when we saw empty pharmacy shelves during the pandemic. More often, matter circulates in ways that are taken for granted, invisible yet critical to how hospitals function. Each essay in this book takes the matter of hospitals as a starting point to explore broader themes. Organised alphabetically, The Matter of Hospitals investigates what we can learn from the institution’s materiality about creativity, waste, patient care, community, attention and design. From ‘A’ for atmosphere to ‘Z’ for zips, each essay is a close sensory study of what seem, on the surface, to be mundane things. Beautifully illustrated with artistic photographs and hand-drawn illustrations by the editor, The Matter of Hospitals offers an inspiring and unique examination of the stuff that so many of us take for granted, in a place that we never do.
