The Refurbishment of Channel 4

In this video, Peter van de Rotten describes in detail the refurbishment of a 1990s high-tech glass facade at Channel 4's headquarters in London. The original design used a double-curved cable net with point-fixed suspended glass panels. Over time serious safety issues emerged, namely damaged glass and fixings displaced by up to 50mm which threatened sudden energy release and possible collapse. To safely disassemble the facade, the team introduced a third load path, supporting each glass panel from the top steel crown, and designed special clamps to secure cable fixings. The disassembly was carried out in a carefully controlled sequence to safely remove and replace the different elements and components. Key challenges included extremely tight tolerances (down to 20 micrometers), mixing old and new materials, and avoiding stress around glass holes. The team chose to preserve the original facade shape to prevent unpredictable behavior. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Peter van de Rotten for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Chapter 1: Safety

This chapter introduces fundamental safety principles for working in an educational woodworking shop. It focuses on developing a safety mindset and practical safety habits, including planning work, asking questions, using appropriate personal protective equipment, maintaining situational awareness, and working deliberately. It also covers general workshop safety practices, safe machine operation, emergency awareness, and kickback hazards. A hands-on push-stick project demonstrates how safety principles can be integrated into practical woodworking instruction.

Introduction to Woodworking Machines

Introduction to Woodworking Machines is written to introduce basic woodworking machine safety and techniques to beginner woodworkers using an instructional woodshop. This guide is not a substitute for an in-person learning experience led by a competent instructor in the woodshop. While woodworking tools and machines present risk, accidents are avoided in shops where safety is a shared priority. A safety-conscious shop creates a culture of safety first through appropriate training, properly maintained tools and safety equipment, and a well-organized workspace.

Chapter 3: Bandsaw

This chapter introduces the bandsaw and its use in an educational woodworking shop. It explains the main components and functions of the machine, including the blade, wheels, guides, blade guard and work table. The chapter covers safe setup and operation for straight and curved cuts, including blade selection, tension, guide adjustment, workpiece positioning and feed rate. It also addresses relief cuts for tight curves and common safety hazards. A practical exercise demonstrates how to use the bandsaw to cut the shape of a wooden push stick.

Chapter 5: Compound Miter Saw

This chapter introduces the compound miter saw and its use in an educational woodworking shop. It explains the main features and functions of compound and sliding compound miter saws and their applications in woodworking. The chapter focuses on safe and accurate cutting, including correct material positioning, use of the fence and table, blade positioning, hand placement, cutting technique, and safe operating practices. It also explains appropriate material preparation and limitations of the machine. A practical exercise demonstrates basic compound miter saw operation.

Chapter 6: Jointer

This chapter introduces the jointer and its role in preparing rough lumber for woodworking. It explains how a jointer creates flat, straight and square reference surfaces by removing high spots from a board. The chapter covers the main components of the machine, including the infeed and outfeed tables, cutterhead, fence and guard, as well as basic face and edge jointing procedures. It also addresses safe workpiece positioning, push pads, kickback awareness, material requirements and common operating restrictions.

Chapter 8: Table saw

This chapter introduces the table saw and its use in an educational woodworking shop. It explains the main components and functions of the machine and its two basic operations: ripping and cross-cutting. The chapter covers safe and accurate setup and operation, including blade height and angle, use of the rip fence and miter gauge, workpiece positioning, feed direction and push sticks. Particular attention is given to kickback prevention, safe hand placement, blade guards and appropriate material preparation. A practical exercise demonstrates basic table saw operation.

Chapter 2: Drill press

This chapter introduces the drill press and its use in an educational woodworking shop. It explains the main components and functions of the machine, common drill bits, workpiece layout and setup, speed selection, depth control, clamping and safe drilling procedures. Particular attention is given to the main hazards of drill press operation, including entanglement, workpiece rotation and leaving the chuck key in the chuck. The chapter concludes with a practical exercise in drilling the hole for a wooden push stick.

Chapter 7: Planer

This chapter introduces the planer and its role in preparing solid wood for woodworking. It explains how a planer produces smooth, parallel surfaces, reduces board thickness, and brings boards to a consistent dimension. The chapter describes the main components of the machine, including the cutterhead, infeed and outfeed rollers, chipbreaker, pressure bar, and adjustable table. It covers proper material preparation, grain direction, depth of cut, machine setup, snipe, and safe operating practices, including how to respond to a stuck workpiece and how to minimize kickback hazards.

Chapter 4: Stationary sanders

This chapter introduces stationary sanders used in an educational woodworking shop. It explains the purpose and applications of different types of sanders, including belt, disc, spindle, and thicknessing sanders, and how to select a sander according to the shape and surface of a workpiece. The chapter covers basic setup and safe operating practices, including workpiece positioning, feed direction, abrasive condition, dust and respiratory protection, and common hazards. A practical exercise demonstrates how to use stationary sanders to smooth and finish the edges of a wooden push stick.
