Introduction to data management as part of Open Science

Data management is part of the research cycle. It is crucial to think about it in the design phase of any experiment. This self-study module gives you hands on advice on what to do (and what NOT) with research data. It is not about (statistical) data analysis. This self-study module helps students get familiar with setting up their data management plan. As it’s an introduction to this topic, it is for students at beginner level. After completing this self-study module, you should be able to answer the following questions: What do I store? Where do I store? How can others understand what I stored? Why should I care?

The Origins of Structural Gass design

In this video, Tim Macfarlane, a structural engineer in London, traces structural glass from its hesitant beginnings in 1989 to its role in contemporary architecture. Glass is unique not because it is new, but because of its magical simplicity: a thin sheet that keeps weather out while connecting inside to outside. Through constant innovation, glass has undergone numerous processes such as lamination, toughening, or coatings that, while improving performance, also reduce reusability and raise environmental questions about whether large, complex glass is truly sensible. Early projects with architects Eva Jiřičná and Rick Mather forced Tim to question fundamental issues the industry had not addressed: how strong glass really is, how to calculate it, and how to make it safe, information once treated as private intellectual property. His role became one of moral integrity, negotiating between market pressures and client ambitions. Tim advises young engineers to keep an open mind, love life, and have fun with curiosity. True intelligence comes from within, not from AI. The journey of asking questions and fulfilling yourself as a human being is what matters. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Macfarlane for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning.

De Reflector – Beyond Elemental Loss | Radboud Reflects Lecture by philosopher Marjolein Oele

How can the classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth—help us grapple with loss in an era of climate change? In her latest book Beyond Elemental Loss, philosopher Marjolein Oele observes how shifting elements, such as unusual weather, polluted air and sudden wildfires, can leave us feeling disoriented. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, as well as great thinkers such as Elinor Ostrom and Michael Serres, she makes a case for trust-building as a path forward. Yet, in an age of historically low trust in politics, how can trust offer a solution? Listen to this conversation between philosopher Cees Leijenhorst and environmental philosopher Marjolein Oele about her latest book, covering how we can view loss during a climate crisis through the elements, the importance of communities, and whether she is optimistic about the future. About the speaker Marjolein Oele is professor of Philosophy of the Humanities at Radboud University. She is the author of Beyond Elemental Loss: Shifting Constellations of Water, Fire, Air and Earth and E-Co-Affectivity: Exploring Pathos at Life's Material Interfaces. Her most recent research project focuses on ‘affects’ in the Anthropocene. Did you find this interesting? Subscribe to the channel on which you listened to De Reflector. Lessons Learned

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is one of the most widely applied computational modelling research techniques in archaeology, because it is well suited to the questions asked by archaeologists. However, the access to vocational training for ABM is limited. In this paper we present the Open Educational Resources (OER) that we produced in an international cooperation. For this purpose, we created online and open tutorials for ABM for archaeologists. In addition, how-to guides and support material were created, both for teachers and students. The materials adhere to international (European) standards in relation to education and the Digital Skills Passport for archaeology. The teaching materials have been well tested using a diverse group of archaeologists during various international conferences and meetings. It was shown that the knowledge and skills of the participants in relation to ABM improved. In addition, the demand for the teaching materials and the workshops was high, ensuring that the tutorials on ABM will be used in the future.
