Risk and Reliability for Engineers

This book covers a wide range of topics that involve the use of probability to solve problems in engineering design and research. Although it is relevant for a wide range of disciplines, it draws heavily on the fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering and the geosciences. Specific topics include risk analysis, probabilistic design, reliability-based design (component and system reliability). Future versions of this book will include additional applications of probability theory related to continuous distributions, extreme value analysis and expanded chapters on component and system reliability. A number of practical examples and exercises are included, both analytic and numerical, some of which use an interactive feature that allows Python code to be used in the web browser without any additional software installation.

Mathematics for Quantum Physics – 2nd edition

Mathematics for Quantum Physics provides a compact introduction to the most important mathematical tools used in quantum mechanics. The text is aimed at students who already possess basic knowledge of calculus and complex numbers. It is divided into three parts: analysis, linear algebra and probability. The focus is on examples and applications, and each section comes with a collection of exercises.

Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Mathematics for Biomedical Physics

Mathematics for Biomedical Physics is an open access peer-reviewed textbook geared to introduce several mathematical topics at the rudimentary level so that students can appreciate the applications of mathematics to the interdisciplinary field of biomedical physics. Most of the topics are presented in their simplest but rigorous form so that students can easily understand the advanced form of these topics when the need arises. Several end-of-chapter problems and chapter examples relate the applications of mathematics to biomedical physics. After mastering the topics of this book, students would be ready to embark on quantitative thinking in various topics of biology and medicine. Table of Contents Chapter 1: Differential Calculus Chapter 2: Integral Calculus Chapter 3: Infinite Series Interlude Chapter 4: Fourier Series Chapter 5: Complex Variables Chapter 6: Determinants Chapter 7: Matrices Chapter 8: Vector Analysis Chapter 9: Curvilinear Coordinates and Multiple Integrals Chapter 10: Vector Calculus Chapter 11: First Order Differential Equations Chapter 12: Diffusion Equation Chapter 13: Probability Distribution Functions Appendix A: Limiting Value of Sinθ/θ as θ->0 Appendix B: Appendix C: Appendix D: Areas Under the Standard Normal Curve

Probabalistic Analysis of Classical Oscillator

This virtual lab serves as a bridge from classical mechanics to the inherently probabilistic nature of quantum theory. It allows students to analyze a classical system, here a block oscillating on a spring, in a probabilistic way. This is achieved through a photographer that takes snapshots (photos) of the oscillating block at random times. The position of the block is binned, building up a histogram of snapshot numbers versus position bins. Students can change the bin size, and convert the snapshot histogram into a probability density histogram. They can also display the theoretical probability density histogram, as well as the theoretical probability density curve as the bin size tends to zero. Students can see that the more measurements they take, the smaller on average the deviations of their data from the theoretical values. A second tab allows students to solve a number of challenges. The challenges probe the primary aims outlined below. Primary aims: Students can describe the experimental procedure shown in the lab for analyzing a classical system in a probabilistic way. Students can describe qualitatively how the block’s speed in a given region relates to the number of snapshots in that region. Students understand the difference between a probability and a probability density. They can perform calculations to find probabilities and probability densities from the number of snapshots in a given region.

Save the city: Maputo Resilience Game

This game models how Maputo responds to shocks and stresses and strives to increase its resilience from 2020 through 2050. There are four subsystems in the game: agriculture, health care, society and culture, and infrastructure. Each subsystem represents an important part of the city and should try to increase their resilience through developing and maintaining adaptation measures. Each measure has a different effect on the resilience of a subsystem. There are a range of shocks and stresses that can disrupt the city. The game takes time, the government’s budget, probability, and cooperation into account to represent some of the complex factors at play real world.

Pluvial floods in Rotterdam

This present report contains an overview of the effects and future adaptation strategies for a potential fluvial flood in the city of Rotterdam. To begin with, the presence of the river Nieuwe Maas through Rotterdam added up with the expected intense climate change effects in the future, pose a threat for a fluvial flood to occur. In this case, the mostly affected areas would be the unembanked ones such as Kop van Feijenoord and Noordereiland. Critical infrastructure such as dikes and railways while also properties, houses and the road network would face a great threat in a possible river flood. Until 2050, with the increased climate change implications such as extreme rainfalls and augmented river discharge, a probability of a fluvial flood will not remain at the low levels it is today. Furthermore, this kind of shock in the city of Rotterdam would have serious consequences on the society and create serious ethical dilemmas. Questions such as how equally would compensations be distributed or would the people just abandon their homes before the actual flood occurs, are only few from the ones that would rise. Nevertheless, essential adaptation strategies are already applied or being planned in order for Rotterdam to be able withstand these disastrous effects. Floating houses and reinforced dikes are some of the technical measures mentioned while there are specific governance arrangements that can be decided. These measures, can also have both a positive and negative effect on society, something that is also analysed. Moreover, some suggestions regarding the monitoring of the effects of the reported strategies and measures are included. In the last part of the report, understanding and discussion questions are added for readers.
