Open Access Publishing (Leiden University & LUMC)

Leiden University and the LUMC are committed Open Science and the National Open Science Plan. Both institutions consider Open Access (OA) publishing a priority and expect you to publish your scholarly articles as openly as possible. We aim to encourage OA publishing by making it simple and feasible in every discipline. Making research publications OA allows society as a whole to benefit from Leiden University and LUMC research output and increases the visibility of your publications and the research you are performing. You may be thinking of writing up your research findings into an article, or perhaps you already have a manuscript ready to submit to a journal. In either case, you want to make sure that you make the right choices for your publication. In this module we explain what OA means, what your OA options are, and where you can find the information you need to make the best choice for your publication.

Workshop Recognition and Rewards

The interactive workshop Recognition and Rewards focuses on the impact of recognition and rewards on the choices made within research regarding Open Science principles. It is notable that, in the current system, Open Science-related tasks receive less recognition and appreciation than 'traditional' research tasks. The workshop demonstrates how the societal impact of research can change through a cultural shift regarding recognition and rewards for Open Science tasks.

Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

Intro to Open Science

Created for the GSLS Master introduction Days 2025, Utrecht University. This lecture will introduce you to the principles and practices of Open Science, a global movement aimed at making scientific research more accessible, transparent, and collaborative. You will learn why open science matters for accelerating discoveries, improving research quality, and enhancing reproducibility. Key topics include open access publishing, open and FAIR data, preprints, open peer review, and sharing research tools and methods. The session will also cover practical tips on how you can integrate open science practices into your own research from the start of your graduate journey. By embracing open science, you contribute to a more inclusive and impactful scientific community.

AI as a science - course manual

AI as a Science aims to highlight how research involving “artificial intelligence” can be considered scientific, and what that means for us as scholars engaged in this — and related — areas of study. During the course, we will explore answers to questions such as: What is AI? What role do scientists play in the development of AI? And vice versa: what role do AI researchers play in the scientific investigations of computation, artificial intelligence, and intelligence more broadly? Do such roles come with responsibilities and ethical duties? We will explore these questions dialogically (i.e., through dialogue, discussions, and presentations), as well as through lectures. Perspectives will include critical, historical, sociological, and philosophical angles. We will touch on: The history of AI, going as far back as ancient Chinese and Greek civilizations; future projections, including the possibility of another "AI winter." Ultimately, you will aim to answer for yourselves: Is AI a science? Can it be? Will it be? The course will be examined through: Group presentation – You will be split into teams to create a presentation (see Presentation). The presentation combines: Group collaboration, An individual (or more than one person’s) presentation (10 minutes max). Final essay – You may choose a topic related to the course and aligned with your background or interests (see Essay). The essay will take the form of a literature review or journal-style article, aiming to: Deepen and/or broaden your knowledge on one or more topics from the course, Allow you to zoom in or out and develop your own unique perspective. Learning Goals: AI as a Science aims to teach you — and for you to teach yourselves — how to: Define science and AI, critically and in your own words. Understand the historical context of AI: When did AI or AI-like disciplines and ideas emerge? Understand the current state of AI and explore possible futures: Is time a flat circle when it comes to recurring “AI winters”?

Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.
