The Medieval Podcast | Patterns of Plague with Lori Jones

There are some very entrenched cultural ideas about the plague these days, involving big, beaky masks, and agonized people flagellating themselves in the street. But the way people thought about and treated plague changed over time, as the disease revisited populations regularly over the course of centuries. And just like our imaginings of plague today can tell us a lot about how we see the medieval world, so the changing way people wrote about plague can tell us a whole lot of interesting stuff about medieval and early modern culture. This week, Daniele speaks with Lori Jones about the evolution of the plague tract, who was considered qualified to write about plague, and some surprising ways religion fits - or doesn't fit - into the picture. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

The Politics of Theatre, pt. 2 with Dirk Visser | In a Nutshell

How was the AIDS epidemic translated into theatre plays? Why is the way we talk about illness important? And what does Susan Sontag have to do with all of that In this episode of In a Nutshell, Antonia and guest Dirk Visser take a look at the way theatre can – and has – tackled heavy topics like AIDS. And why it matters how a story is being told. Dirk Visser has conducted his PhD at the Faculty of Arts research investigates the theatrical response to the AIDS crisis in Britain and America, focusing particularly on those plays that did not enter the canon of English or American drama. His intend is thereby to restore those plays as part within the cultural memory of the AIDS epidemic. This episode is part of a two-part series on politics and theatre. Also tune in for the first episode, which explores the topic of political theatre in general. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

The Politics of Theatre with Ruud van den Beuken | In a Nutshell

How political is theatre? What do plays have to do with Brexit? And how has theatre shaped (and commented on) political developments in the past? In this episode of In a Nutshell, Antonia and guest Ruud van den Beuken explore how political topics can be explored in theatre – and ask the question whether theatre is always the best way to address certain political issues, especially when it comes to class in Britain. Ruud van den Beuken is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts. His own theatre research has started with a course on Samuel Beckett and Irish theatre, which was also the topic of his PhD research. Amongst other things, Ruud is researching Brexit theatre, national identity formation (also through theatre) and postcolonial cultural memory. Would you like to learn more about the politics of theatre? Then follow Ruud’s advise and watch some theatre plays yourself. Including Sadettin Kirmiziyuz's Citzen K, available on the NPO streaming service. This episode is part of a two-part series on politics and theatre. Also tune in for the second episode, which explores AIDS theatre. Edit: Jara Majerus Cover: Antonia Leise

De Reflector – Beyond Elemental Loss | Radboud Reflects Lecture by philosopher Marjolein Oele

How can the classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth—help us grapple with loss in an era of climate change? In her latest book Beyond Elemental Loss, philosopher Marjolein Oele observes how shifting elements, such as unusual weather, polluted air and sudden wildfires, can leave us feeling disoriented. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, as well as great thinkers such as Elinor Ostrom and Michael Serres, she makes a case for trust-building as a path forward. Yet, in an age of historically low trust in politics, how can trust offer a solution? Listen to this conversation between philosopher Cees Leijenhorst and environmental philosopher Marjolein Oele about her latest book, covering how we can view loss during a climate crisis through the elements, the importance of communities, and whether she is optimistic about the future. About the speaker Marjolein Oele is professor of Philosophy of the Humanities at Radboud University. She is the author of Beyond Elemental Loss: Shifting Constellations of Water, Fire, Air and Earth and E-Co-Affectivity: Exploring Pathos at Life's Material Interfaces. Her most recent research project focuses on ‘affects’ in the Anthropocene. Did you find this interesting? Subscribe to the channel on which you listened to De Reflector. Private and Professional: Where is the Line? | Radboud Reflects Lecture by Bert van den Brink and Klaas Landsman

To what extent should scientists speak out politically? Where is the line between speaking out as a private individual, and speaking out in your role as a scientist? Should members of the academic community be extra careful when navigating political topics? Can what you say and do privately influence your professionality as a university employee, or is it naive to think you can separate the scientist from the human being? Listen to political philosopher Bert van den Brink and mathematician Klaas Landsman and reflect on the line between private and professional in political discourse. Private and Professional: Where is the Line? | Academic Affairs with political philosopher and dean of PTRS Bert van den Brink and mathematician and member of Scientist Rebellion Klaas Landsman Thursday 20 November 2025 | 12.30 – 13.15 hrs | Lecture Hall Complex, Radboud University Read the review: www.ru.nl/en/services/sport-cu…ndige-klaas-landsman
