Circulair Economy #4 - Making Sustainability Tangible: LCA, ECI, and the Circular Transition

In this episode, host Maerhaba Yishake speaks with Paul Prinssen, co-founder of EcoReview, about how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI/MKI) help organizations make sustainability measurable and actionable. Paul shares practical examples of how businesses and public organizations can use these tools to support circular design, sustainable procurement, and informed decision-making. Joining the conversation is Saxion student Stein Wieskamp, who brings a student perspective to the discussion.

Curved Glass: An Industry Perspective

In this video, Ferran Figuerola, a third-generation leader of the nearly century-old family business Cricursa, traces curved glass from its traditional flat origins to its role in ambitious architectural facades. Curved glass is unique because it adapts to complex geometries, becoming exceptionally stiff and capable of resisting wind loads while offering dynamic light effects that change with the angle of light. Key challenges center on both manufacturing and logistics. The process requires specialized ovens, careful heat treatment choices, and precise molding or quenching techniques. Installing curved glass is trickier than flat glass because its three-dimensional shape demands specialized equipment and careful prediction of how the glass will behave when lifted or inclined. Beyond production, storing and shipping these unstable curved forms adds further difficulty. Figuerola emphasizes that despite nearly a century of shared experience, every day brings new learning opportunities and challenges. He explains how to anticipate unpredictable costs by accounting for risks and uncertainties in production. In extreme cases, five production attempts may yield solely one success. Yet surprises can go both ways: a complex glass ladder and slide created for Glasstec in Düsseldorf succeeded on the very first try, defying his own cautious expectations. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Ferran Figuerola and Cricursa for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Positionality Statement: Reflective assignment on the role of a researcher

In this learning activity, students reflect on their position within the research process. They explore how their identity, experiences, and disciplinary background shape their perspective and translate this into a short positionality statement. The activity centers around the question 'Who Am I?'. The assignment fosters critical thinking, self-awareness, and interdisciplinary awareness.

The Medieval Podcast | Self-Help and the Seven Deadly Sins with Peter Jones

We've all been there: suddenly face-to-face with our ugliest selves, wrestling with pride, envy, anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, or lust. AKA the Seven Deadly Sins. In the Middle Ages, Christian thinkers divided moral missteps into these seven familiar categories, allowing them to ponder the many ways humanity can fall into sin - as well as how to get out of it. This week, Danièle speaks with Peter Jones about how people grappled with the Seven Deadly Sins in the Middle Ages, some pretty fun confessions, and how the medieval perspective might just help us better navigate the modern world. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

Engineering Signal Analysis

Engineering Signal Analysis - Theory, is an introductory textbook on the analysis of signals in time and frequency. It takes an engineer’s perspective and discusses how to characterize, analyze and operate on signals. The basic theoretical concepts, Fourier series and transform, are explained in continuous time. It then introduces discrete-time signals, addressing how sampling and finite signal duration affect spectral analysis. It discusses the discrete Fourier transform and its use in spectral estimation. The book concludes with an introduction to linear systems and signal filtering.

The Stream-of-Consciousness (SoC) Dialogue Method

Using timed speaking turns, alternating roles (speaking and listening), and carefully crafted ‘prompts’ (sentence starters), this simple but potent method gradually moves pairs into deeper layers of exploration and sharing, while fostering reflection, attentive listening, and connection.

Introduction to Environmental Sustainability in Glass

In this video Rebecca Hartwell outlines the two key factors for sustainable glass design: material efficiency and energy efficiency. Material efficiency focuses on reducing the environmental impact from production to end-of-life, guided by the "9R framework". Energy efficiency concerns the glass's role in reducing a building's operational energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. The video explains that while advancements like double glazing and low-E coatings have improved energy efficiency, they often create complex, multi-material assemblies that are difficult to disassemble and recycle. Consequently, unlike container glass, most post-consumer flat glass is rarely recycled and is often downcycled or landfilled. A whole life-cycle perspective, balancing embodied and operational carbon, is essential for a sustainable glass future. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Rebecca Hartwell for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. VR environment for the course "In search of the Masses in Antiquity"

This is a 3D model of a part of Rome, produced for the course "In Search of the Masses in Antiquity". Includes some crowds and a procession, to enable a crowd perspective and reflect on specific hypotheses and reconstructions. The model was created by the 4D Research Lab of the University of Amsterdam for the project 'Virtual Past Places', in collaboration with course teacher Danielle Slootjes. The emulated situation is the triumph of the Bellum Judaicum. For this situation, compare the account of Flavius Josephus and other historical and iconographic accounts of this event with actual space. Bringing this into 3D space allows students to have more input available than through the historical texts and imagery: the line of sights, spatiality and awareness of being in a crowd, watching a triumph. A fictional central area gives entry to the two scenes. This model is accessible as a VR room using Hubs Cloud software (virtualplaces-uva.eu). For reproducability and reuse, consult the manual at https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.30490373 and follow the instructions to set up your own Hubs Cloud instance. For the relevant dataset, please use the link to the Zenodo deposition. Funding and context Virtual Past Places has been made possible by a grant, the 'Stimuleringsregeling Online Onderwijs' from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, OCW), coordinated by SURF, the cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. Virtual Past Places includes open access publication of all developed teaching materials as Open Educational Resources, the development of training materials, and the organisation of inspiration and counselling sessions for peers. Actuele dilemma's
