The Medieval Podcast | A Medieval Paper Armoury with Chassica Kirchhoff

To picture the Middle Ages is to picture knights in shining armour. Custom-made, fashionable, and often beautiful, medieval armour was more than just practical: it was art. And in the late Middle Ages, a collection of talented artists captured the functional elegance of armour on paper. This week, Daniele speaks with Chassica Kirchhoff about armour as protection, art, and memorial in the Thun-Hohenstein Album. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! To find out how to help spread the joy of medieval history, please visit patreon.com/themedievalpodcast

How To Write A Quantitative Research Paper

So, you need to write a ‘quantitative’ research paper, and you want to know: what is the correct way of writing such a paper? The answer is, unfortunately: it depends … For one, there is no universally accepted, ‘correct’ way of writing any paper in the social sciences in general. Moreover, even just within the so-called ‘quantitative’ research tradition specifically, there exist different viewpoints on what makes for a good research paper. To muddy things up even further, how to write a paper will also depend on the specific research question(s) that it addresses. Hence, even the same scientist might opt for varying approaches in different papers. Having said that, it is possible to identify some common rules and practices that are often followed, as well as a number of practices that should generally be avoided. Based on these common rules and practices, this document is meant to help you on your way with writing a ‘quantitative’ research paper by offering a number of tips, tricks and rules-of-thumb. None of these rules and practices are set in stone, and you (or your teacher/supervisor) may have excellent arguments to deviate from them. However, in general, following them will greatly increase the quality of your paper.

Maintaining Classroom Management

In this report, the design of a blueprint for learning classroom management is presented. This program will be designed for pre-service lower secondary school teachers in the Netherlands (age group 11 to 16-year-old students; 2e graads in Dutch). These teachers are completing a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area and take a six-month minor in which they receive pedagogical and didactical training to be prepared for teaching in secondary schools. This minor is accompanied by an internship in which the pre-service teachers put their skills into practice.Although the minor allots extensive attention to classroom management, teachers often struggle to manage both class and content. This is understandable as, although classroom management can be learned with the right amount of practice and support, mastery of classroom management skills takes around four years on average takes. To guide pre-service teachers well on their way towards mastering classroom management, a rigorous and evidence-based approach to teaching classroom management to pre-service teachers is needed. An evidence-based approach should allow for a productive and enjoyable learning process for pre-service teachers. One well-studied approach is found in the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model which offers an evidence-based approach to teaching complex skills. This paper adapts the 4C/ID model and applies it to the skill of classroom management for pre-service teachers in the Netherlands.

Interdisciplinary Writing Assignment

This interdisciplinary writing assignment is an example of how students can analyse and argue a complex problem from different perspectives. The assignment is discipline- neutral and can be adapted to different subject areas and themes. It can be chosen to be completed individually or, on the contrary, as group work. In this document you will also find an elaborate example concerning the disciplines law and linguistics.

Interdisciplinaire Schrijfopdracht

Facing Floods: A stakeholder river management game

In river management, decisions are influenced by multiple stakeholders, each with different priorities, needs, and levels of influence. While collaboration is essential to solve river-related challenges, these differences create a complex dynamic environment in decision-making processes. This game simulates the challenges of river management by placing players in the roles of various stakeholders, each with their own goals, needs, and budgets. Players must work toward achieving their individual objectives while negotiating and cooperating with others, balancing personal interests with the shared responsibility of managing the river. The "Facilitator Guide" (see downloads) is designed to assist you in organizing and facilitating a game with 7 or more players, as well as preparing for the session. Additionally, you will find the various game materials required for gameplay. These materials need to be printed on A4 or A3 paper, with detailed printing instructions provided in the "Print Instructions" file. Learning goals • Experience the decision-making process related to complex systems as the development and management of river engineering infrastructure. • Get acquainted with the interests and goals of the involved stakeholders, realize that they may be conflicting or equivalent, and possibly bond with each other. • Debate the effectiveness and impacts of river interventions on the river system, environment and society, from the perspective of a stakeholder. • Appreciate the challenges of proposing a solution that integrates different river interventions and satisfies the goals of multiple stakeholders. • Reflect on the challenges of decision-making processes in complex systems. This game was developed for the River Engineering module, more specifically the unit River Functions and Management, of the MSc Civil Engineering program of the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft). However, the game is suitable for anyone interested in learning about stakeholder involvement and interactions in river management. More information about the use of the game can be found in the facilitator manual. Credits: this game was developed by the TU Delft Gamelab (website:https://copy.gamelab.tbm.tudelft.nl/).

Light Forms: Modular Variation, Pattern, Structure

Light Forms is a compressive glass block system aimed at creating site-specific architectural structures that investigates three-dimensional forms studied for light transmission and structural performance. In this video, Catie Newell and Alli Hoag discuss the production and potential applications of Light Forms in architecture, as well as their personal motivations for working with glass as a structural material. To learn more about their research at the University of Michigan and the Bowling Green State University, a link to an open-access paper published in the proceeding of the Challenging Glass Conference is provided. The interview was recorded at the Challenging Glass Conference 9 in June 2024 in Delft. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with the NewMedia Centre at TU Delft. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750.
