AgriLemma 2.0: A serious game for exploring dilemmas in agriculture

In AgriLemma, you are a farmer in Europe managing your own farm across 8 seasons. You grow six types of crops — potatoes, sugar beets, rapeseed, corn, wheat, and chickpeas — each requiring resources such as seeds, water, nutrients, and workers. Players must run, invest in, and improve their farm with sustainable technologies while balancing competing priorities and navigating uncertainties like weather events and pest attacks. The objective is to maximize overall farm health, which is determined by three dimensions: environmental health (positive ecological impact), social health (worker satisfaction), and financial health (farm profitability). Players must strategize across all three dimensions simultaneously — decisions that boost profit may come at an environmental cost, and vice versa. The game makes these trade-offs tangible, encouraging reflection on what sustainable farming really requires. ------------------------------ Learning objectives: · Experiment with different strategies — to operationalize and adapt an approach under pressure, and to reflect on how well it held up. · Expose students to issues of risk management — to plan, control, and explain the reasoning behind in-game choices relating to sustainability, soil conservation practices, integrated crop management, weeding, and pest management, and to learn how to respond when conditions change. · Experience the complexity of decision-making — to take into account weather and policy uncertainties, sustainability pressures, economic realities, and the broader context in which farm decisions are made. --------------------------------Practical information: · Format: Board game (physical/ print-and-play) · Players: 2-4 players (extendable to 8 by playing in teams of 2) · Duration: 3 hours, including onboarding and debrief · Level: Higher education / Stakeholder engagement · Language: English --------------------------------Credits: AgriLemma was originally designed as part of the WATERAGRI project. The second version, including a full redesign of the graphics, was developed with funding support from the TU Delft Open Science Programme course "Civic Engagement in Action: Empowering Researchers and Educators to Make an Impact". Game design: Dr. ir. Aashna Mittal - TU Delft, Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management Graphic design and illustration: Gracia Bovenberg-Murris and Michelle de Smit – TU Delft GameLab Note on image generation: The images in the tech cards and the border of the main game board were created using AI-generated imagery. The constructed wetlands card image is also AI-generated. All other cards and box art are hand-drawn or created in Adobe Illustrator. Note on usability: The print-and-play version of the game has been optimized for office printing.

Sustainable EU Economy: an interactive Textbook for Business Students

Dear Reader, Welcome to Sustainable EU Economy. This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. In this way, you may explore the EU not only as a historical and political project, but also as a dynamic economic system that continually reshapes business strategy, trade, and innovation. About the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy: Awarded by the European Commission to Dr. Beata Kviatek and hosted by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy represents the first such Chair at a Dutch university of applied sciences. Object Orientation Pressure Cooker

What — This methodology fits research projects that use a concrete “surprising” object as the starting point of “more complex” inquiry. The methodology invites students: to make an inventory of different perspectives to study a central object, and understand what knowledge these perspectives will yield about particular elements of their research project topic; to understand the relations/connections between these various disciplinary perspectives and elements, and; to make an informed decision about which perspectives and elements to pursue and which ones to leave out For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a seminar/working group of students (bachelor 3, honours and ma/rma students) as well as educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in object orientation supports the appreciation of multi-perspectivity (identity dimension and/or social-interactive dimension of interdisciplinary learning) which aids in grasping defining elements of various disciplines (cognitive dimension). How long—Depending on the context, it can be done as a quick starter or as a class-filling activity. In-class activities take up to two and a half hours. Preparation at home takes around two hours. Publication strategies & Open Access: Choosing a journal to publish in

Choosing a journal to publish in Where will you publish your next journal article? With thousands of journals available it can be hard to find the right journal for your work. At the bottom of this page you can find an overview of tools that can help you create a 'shortlist' of journals to publish in. Some disciplines or research schools have developed journal lists, providing an overview of the journals most relevant to them. Aims & scope After creating a shortlist of suitable journals you need to check the aims and scope of the journals. Open Access options When choosing a journal the options to publish in Open Access can be important as well. All EUR-researchers are required to make their publications Open Access and most research funders have adopted policies that make Open Access publishing mandatory. AAbstracting and indexing information Where is the journal indexed? In other words: in which databases will researchers and students be able to find your article in their search results? Are these multidisciplinary databases, like Scopus or Web of Science, and/or discipline specific databases like EconLit, ERIC, PsycINFO or Sociological Abstracts? Are these databases you and your peers use? Tools to find journals to publish in Several tools have been developed to help you find suitable journals: these tools allow you to upload title, abstract and/or keywords of your article and – using data of articles already published - matching journals are shown. Some of these tools are publisher specific, others are publisher neutral. Journal lists Some disciplines and schools have created list of journals to publish in. These list are sometimes also used to evaluate researchers. Suggested.

The European Experience

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today’s history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European’ analyses of the continent’s past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.
