Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. In this way, you may explore the EU not only as a historical and political project, but also as a dynamic economic system that continually reshapes business strategy, trade, and innovation. About the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy: Awarded by the European Commission to Dr. Beata Kviatek and hosted by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy represents the first such Chair at a Dutch university of applied sciences. Co‑financed by the Erasmus+ Programme and Hanze University, the Chair advances knowledge of the EU’s transition toward a climate‑neutral, resource‑efficient, and socially inclusive economy. It promotes excellence in teaching and research, integrates sustainability priorities into business education, and fosters dialogue among academia, policymakers, businesses, and society. The Rest Is History | 551. The Road to 1066: Countdown to Conquest (Part 4)

In the triumvirate of 1066, William of Normandy, Harald Hardrada, and Harold Godwinson, the latter has above all endured as one of the great heroes of English history. But how did he become the short-lived King during that tumultuous year? The answer lies in his formidable family, the Godwins. Often symbolised as the last of the Anglo-Saxons, their stratospheric rise to power was engineered by Godwin, an obscure Thaine from Sussex, in a striking case of social mobility. Making himself integral to Cnut, he was made Earl of Wessex to help him run his new kingdom. But Godwin was also cunning and conniving, constantly shifting sides to ensure the maximum advantage to his family. Even Edward the Confessor, who hated the Godwinsons, had no choice but to promote Harold and Godwin’s other sons, and marry his daughter, Edith. But, with his hatred mounting and the couple childless, the fortunes of the Godwins would soon change…in September 1051, with tensions reaching boiling point, they went into exile. It would not last, and their return would see them catapulted to even greater heights of influence. Meanwhile, just as Edward’s life was dwindling, Harold’s star was rising, and across the channel William of Normandy’s prowess was also mounting. What would happen when, in a remarkable turn of events, the two men finally met? What fateful oaths were taken that day…? Join Tom and Dominic as they lead us to the brink of 1066, and discuss the family behind it all: the Godwins. How would their hold on England see Harold crowned King of England, and turned oath-breaker? Sowing: The Construction of Historical Longitudinal Population Databases

Twenty-three major databases containing historical longitudinal population data are presented and discussed in this volume, focusing on their aims, content, design, and structure. Some of these databases are based on pure longitudinal sources, such as population registers that continuously observe and record demographic events, including migration and family and household composition. Other databases are family reconstitutions, based on birth, marriage and death records. The third and last category consists of semi-longitudinal databases, that combine, for instance, civil records and censuses and/ or tax registers. The volume traces the origins of historical longitudinal databases from the 1970s and discusses their expansion worldwide, in terms of sources and hard- and software. The contributions highlight the unique genesis and common developmental arcs of these databases, which are rooted in the fields of quantitative history, social and demographic history, and the history of ordinary people. The importance of these databases in advancing knowledge and insights in various disciplines is emphasized and demonstrated, along with the challenges and opportunities they face. The collection of technical descriptions of these databases represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date overview of large database with longitudinal micro-data on historical populations. It includes descriptions of databases from Europe, North America, East-Asia, Australia, South-Africa and Suriname. Technical details, in terms of data entry, cleaning, standardization and record linkage are meticulously documented. The volume is a must-have for all scholars in the field of historical life course studies. To access individual chapters, please visit Historical Life Course Studies: https://hlcs.nl/specialissue5
