Sustainable EU Economy: an interactive Textbook for Business Students

Dear Reader, Welcome to Sustainable EU Economy. This book is more than a textbook—it is an invitation to explore how the European Union shapes business, society, and sustainability in today’s interconnected world. My hope is that it will inspire you to think critically, engage actively, and see how Europe’s vision for a climate‑neutral and inclusive future connects directly to your own journey as a student and professional. This book was created to guide you through one of the most dynamic and influential regions in the world—the European Union. With its single market of over 450 million consumers and policies that shape global standards, the EU is not only a trading bloc but also a laboratory for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. This book will help you see the EU not just as an institution, but as a living system that directly impacts business, society, and the environment. You will explore how Europe is responding to challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and shifting geopolitics, and how these responses create opportunities for businesses and professionals like you. This textbook is not a static resource but an interactive digital reference, designed to evolve alongside the changing study of European integration and sustainability. By combining case studies, discussion prompts, and applied exercises with live seminar content and guest lectures, it adapts to new research, policy debates, and global challenges. In this way, you may explore the EU not only as a historical and political project, but also as a dynamic economic system that continually reshapes business strategy, trade, and innovation. About the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy: Awarded by the European Commission to Dr. Beata Kviatek and hosted by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Jean Monnet Chair in Sustainable EU Economy represents the first such Chair at a Dutch university of applied sciences. Co‑financed by the Erasmus+ Programme and Hanze University, the Chair advances knowledge of the EU’s transition toward a climate‑neutral, resource‑efficient, and socially inclusive economy. It promotes excellence in teaching and research, integrates sustainability priorities into business education, and fosters dialogue among academia, policymakers, businesses, and society. By producing impactful studies on green finance, energy transition, and corporate responsibility, and by linking local initiatives with EU goals, the Chair provides a vibrant platform for debate and engagement on Europe’s sustainable future.

Philosophical Tools for Climate Change

This textbook was created as an open educational resource in the course Philosophy beyond Academia at the University of Groningen in 2024. Except for this introduction, all of the chapters have been created by students of the MA Philosophy Programme of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen. This book is the second book in a series of open educational resources applying philosophical tools and methods to a particular topic. In the past, philosophical tools and methods were applied to the topic of migration in the open educational resource, Migration: A Philosophical Toolkit (https://edusources.nl/materials/c06574c0-d831-4c52-82a9-a85b8d3d43e5/migration). About the book: In this book, the methodological approach to the topic of climate change focuses on the notion of a philosophical tool or method. A philosophical tool is a particular philosophical concept or distinction; a philosophical method is a more general way of thinking about a problem that gives us new insights about the problem, in our case, climate change. What this book attempts to do is apply a number of these tools and methods to the problem of climate change.

Tales of a t-shirt - Book

This book is the outcome of an experimental research and teaching project, aimed at rethinking how the garments we wear create relationships between producers, designers and wearers. The project has researched these relationships centered on the production of a dedicated t-shirt, designed, produced and put to use by the project partners, who are located in the Netherlands and India. This book provides an overview of the project trajectory, focusing on how the project has facilitated students from the vocational training colleges in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Erode (India) to engage in co-creation, and encourage conversations on design, materials, labour, social inequality (caste), gender and value. The book is a resource for students and educators working in fashion-related fields at high-school, vocational training and early bachelor degree levels. Integral to the book are a number of short video clips, dedicated to the crucial phases of the process. This book will be a resource for college students and educators who are concerned with the production and use of textiles, particularly in relation to fair trade, circularity and sustainability in the garment industry. It aims to elucidate the textile value network that supports the production of cotton garments, illustrating the processes (designing, farming, ginning, spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, cut-make-trim, and shipping as well as wearing, customizing, and discarding). It does this by following the production of a long-sleeved, unisex t-shirt co-designed by students in the Netherlands and India. Through videos and photos, as well as texts, the book aims to make this process accessible and engaging to fashion and design students. With the book we aim to raise the awareness of future students in relation to the production of garments by enabling them to follow their peers and colleagues as they participate in the production processes. Moreover, by enabling the students to engage with the stories connected to the diverse people who are involved in the production process and to learn about the challenges they face, we aim to empower the students to become more socially and environmentally conscious fashion designers.

Rephrased SDGs for Higher Education for Sustainability (HES)

Based on the interviews held with teachers and students from 38 BA programmes, we rephrased the SDGs from the perspective of HESD. These descriptions can help to inform or inspire discussions about sustainability themes within an academic research and teaching context. The list of rephrased SDGs was used to create a set of ‘SDG competency cards’, that can be used to create learning goals that combine SDGs and competencies.

Byzantium & Friends | 117. Human paleogenetics and late antique migration: a cross-discipline discussion Thursday May 16, 2024

A roundtable discussion of how the study of ancient human DNA intersects with the study of migration in late antiquity. Can laboratory scientists and primarily textual historians find ways to interface given their different methods, data, concepts, and conclusions? The discussion was organized by Tina Sessa (The Ohio State University) and Tim Newfield (Georgetown University), and moderated by Anthony Kaldellis (University of Chicago). Participants include Patrick Geary (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, emeritus), Janet Kay (Princeton University), István Koncz (Eötvös Loránd University), Hannah Moots (University of Chicago), Brian Swain (Kennesaw State University), and Krishna Veeramah (Stony Brook University). A transcript of the discussion will appear in the journal Studies in Late Antiquity.

Migration

This book was created as an open educational resource in the course Philosophy beyond Academia at the University of Groningen in 2023. Except for this introduction and the chapter Martin Buber’s I-It versus I-You Distinction, all of the chapters have been created by students of the MA Philosophy Programme of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen. About the book: Migration has been part of human history for as long as we can remember. The geographic movements of large groups of people have shaped human history, and also individuals have moved from one place to another in search of a better life. Migration has also been investigated from a philosophical perspective. In particular, immigration has been considered philosophically from the perspective of political philosophy and ethics. Next to various arguments for open and closed borders, there has also been work looking at more applied questions. The approach of the present collection of articles on the philosophy of migration has been guided by a concern for philosophical methodology. This book explores the application of both philosophical methods and philosophical tools to the topic of migration. The aim is on the one hand to demonstrate what these tools and methods are and how they can be applied, and on the other hand to demonstrate how rich the topic of migration is from a philosophical perspective.
