Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning.

Mind Measuring Mind

Mind Measuring Mind explores the foundations of psychological methodology, ethical research practice, and the pivotal role of measurement in understanding behaviour and mental processes. Blending teaching material, scholarly context, and personal perspective, it opens a dialogue about the challenges and responsibilities of doing science when the subject and the scientist share the same mind. Why is psychological science different from other sciences? Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike most other fields, psychologists use their own mental processes to examine those of others. This self-referential nature, “mind measuring mind,” brings unique challenges for psychological measurement and the interpretation of research results. This book critically examines psychology as a science, exploring the empirical cycle and the teaching of methodology and statistics. In most academic psychology programmes, students are expected to participate as subjects in psychological studies. To support this, a series of PBL tutorials was developed to familiarise students with the empirical cycle and encourage discussion of validity, research methods, ethical standards, scientific communication, and potential threats to responsible, high-quality research. The materials in this book are based on those tutorials. This open textbook is designed for first- and second-year BSc Psychology students at Maastricht University, particularly those navigating the renewed curriculum’s emphasis on ‘Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking’ (SICT). It serves as a flexible guide for students following individual learning paths, including participation in faculty-led research experiments, reflection on the empirical cycle, and connecting practical experiences to theoretical concepts such as methodology, statistics, validity, ethics, and scientific communication. Ideal for self-study, group PBL sessions, and research practicums, the book helps bridge hands-on research involvement with classroom discussions, supporting competency development in psychological research.

ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Adhesive Connections in Glass Constructions

In this video, Christiane Kothe explains the use of structural adhesive bonding in glass construction, a technology with ancient roots that was revolutionized by modern synthetic and silicone adhesives. Adhesive connections offer key advantages over mechanical fixings, including transparent aesthetics, the ability to join different materials, and even stress distribution, which reduces local weak points. However, their success depends on meticulous surface preparation and managing long curing times, which can impact production efficiency. The video covers the fundamental principles of adhesion and cohesion, the chemical curing process of structural adhesives, and the critical importance of surface pre-treatments to ensure bond strength and long-term durability. Through methods like contact angle measurement and mechanical testing, including accelerated aging, the performance and reliability of these bonds can be validated. When applied correctly, adhesive connections significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and design possibilities of modern glass structures. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. How To Write A Quantitative Research Paper

So, you need to write a ‘quantitative’ research paper, and you want to know: what is the correct way of writing such a paper? The answer is, unfortunately: it depends … For one, there is no universally accepted, ‘correct’ way of writing any paper in the social sciences in general. Moreover, even just within the so-called ‘quantitative’ research tradition specifically, there exist different viewpoints on what makes for a good research paper. To muddy things up even further, how to write a paper will also depend on the specific research question(s) that it addresses. Hence, even the same scientist might opt for varying approaches in different papers. Having said that, it is possible to identify some common rules and practices that are often followed, as well as a number of practices that should generally be avoided. Based on these common rules and practices, this document is meant to help you on your way with writing a ‘quantitative’ research paper by offering a number of tips, tricks and rules-of-thumb. None of these rules and practices are set in stone, and you (or your teacher/supervisor) may have excellent arguments to deviate from them. However, in general, following them will greatly increase the quality of your paper.

The Delft Method for System Dynamics - Book

The Delft Method for System Dynamics is a proven method of learning basic System Dynamics (SD). The method focusses on learning by doing: first you try to make an exercise, and if you do not understand something or do not know something, then you can look it up in the theory part of the book. The book contains theory exercises on topics like causal loop diagramming, delays, and how to motivate why SD is appropriate. The book also contains modelling exercises that show students how to build low to medium complexity models, and how to use these quantitative models for scenario or policy analysis. The theory chapters cover all phases of the modelling cycle: problem articulation, conceptualisation, formulation, evaluation (including validation and scenario analysis), and policy analysis. This book is intended for students and educators in large or small System Dynamics courses, and for motivated students that want to learn SD in their own pace.
