Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Faces of Open Science workshop

Drawing on Utrecht University's Faces of Open Science project, we’ve developed a set of ready-to-use educational activities that invite participants to explore the rich diversity of perspectives within the open science movement. These engaging, interactive materials help learners reflect on their own views, values, and roles in shaping open science—making abstract principles tangible, personal, and actionable. The materials can be used in full as a 4-hour workshop or can be split up in separate activities that take between 30 and 60 minutes. Activities are all developed to promote interaction between participants, for example by storytelling, crafting, or debating.

Open Education general workshop (2024)

The latest version of our Open Educational Resources workshop, presented by the University of Groningen Library and Education Support and Innovation Department. This workshops lasts roughly 2,5 hours, and tackles the five basic OER compentencies as outlined by the UNESCO (Familiarity, Finding, Using, Creating, Sharing OER). The workshop is primarily meant for teachers looking to broadly familiarize themselves with the topic of Open Education and Open Educational Resources. The slides include a number of group discussion questions and assignments for participants to follow. For the quiz assignment, a link to the Google Form with the quiz is present. Making a private copy of the form is needed to ensure others do not change it. For the assignment on the benefits of Open Education, the playing cards for the OE game created by the European Network for Open Education Librarians (ENOEL) are needed. The powerpoint with these paying cards is also included.

Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.

Where history meets modern

At Maastricht University Library, the use of literary sources from its Special Collections by students is promoted and facilitated through the development and organization of specialized research-based learning programs as part of the Wikipedia Education Program. The central aim of these learning programs is to educate students on the social relevance of the Special Collections, such as the Jesuit library, which contains books (on philosophy, history, anatomy, literature, theology, law, and various social sciences) dating back to the beginning of the sixteenth century. In addition, by participating in these programs, undergraduate students from various colleges are given the opportunity to develop their information literacy skills by gaining experience in conducting empirical literature research on primary historical sources and its publication through a popular open-access platform. Evaluations from students indicate that the unique combination of analyzing historical literature and the publication of their review on a modern open-access platform led to increased motivation, readership, sense of responsibility, and understanding about the importance of open-access knowledge transfer and valorization of information. In addition to the Wikipedia Education Program, Maastricht University has also been involved in a noneducational Wikimedia project: Wiki-Wetenschappers. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the activities, approaches, and evaluation of the Wikipedia Education Program and the Wiki-Scientists project at Maastricht University. This chapter is part of the book Wikipedia and Academic Libraries: A Global Project. The book contains 19 chapters by 52 authors from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. The chapters in this book are authored by both new and longtime members of the Wikimedia community, representing a range of experiences.
