Rephrased SDGs for Higher Education for Sustainability (HES)

Based on the interviews held with teachers and students from 38 BA programmes, we rephrased the SDGs from the perspective of HESD. These descriptions can help to inform or inspire discussions about sustainability themes within an academic research and teaching context. The list of rephrased SDGs was used to create a set of ‘SDG competency cards’, that can be used to create learning goals that combine SDGs and competencies.

Anti-Value Sensitive Design - Educational format

This exercise is for students who are already familiar with the methodology of Value Sensitive Design by having had multiple lessons on the theory. The format offered here is a fun and practical application to help students see the real consequences of the ideas they have been learning about, by intentionally reversing the goals to see how outcomes are affected. It is a pedagogical approach to provide students a humorous and inventive way of seeing the importance of Value-Sensitive Design, by instead implementing its opposite. Anti-Value Sensitive Design (AVSD) is identical to VSD except that the values chosen will be negative: replacing fairness with unfairness, and so on. In VSD methodology, the key is understanding that values must be part of technological design and must be consciously distinguished early in the design process. In this exercise, students will make a pitch to an “Evil Boss” highlighting “anti-values” and see how designs are impacted.

Designing an Irresponsible Innovation - Teacher Version

What would an “irresponsible innovation” look like, and how can this reveal values at stake in a given project as well as targets for intervention? This is a short and creative group work exercise targeted at surfacing values as related to a specific technology, case, or project. Ideal to use in support of an existing assignment (e.g., essay), after topics have been chosen.

To fly or not to fly

A roleplay activity that simulates the day of the launch of a new 62 passenger aircraft fully constructed out of carbon nanotube composites. The aircraft has potentially sustained some damage in the night before the scheduled launch. Students take on roles of characters in the Management Team who must decide whether or not to launch, given imperfect knowledge about the aircraft’s condition and safety. Observers pay attention to and report back on the normative, performative, informative, and responsibility dimensions of the discussion about the launch.

The Self-Driving Car – An (ir)responsible innovation? [Teacher version]

When we think of new technologies, we think of innovation. This CBE considers the prominent example of the self-driving car and challenges the students to consider ethical obstacles for its development-process and future consequences. Trough text, video and discussion the students will practice identifying relevant ethical concerns and understanding the heterogeneous character of technological innovation: not all innovation is necessarily responsible innovation.

Idiot-proof and responsibility - Teacher version

The Costa Concordia shipwreck from 2012 was not directly caused by a design flaw, but by social factors such as the captain’s irresponsible behaviour. It still raises the question of whether engineers can take responsibility for preventing future similar accidents. This exercise looks into the possibility of designing cruise ships which are idiot-proof.

Responsible innovation: From MOOC to book

This textbook is based on the MOOC Responsible Innovation offered by the TU Delft. It provides a framework to reflect on the ethics and risks of new technologies. How can we make sure that innovations do justice to social and ethical values? How can we minimize (unknown)risks? The book explains: • The concept and importance of responsible innovation for society • Key ethical concepts and considerations to analyse the risks of new technologies • Different types of innovation (e.g. radical, niche, incremental, frugal) • Roadmap for Responsible Innovation by Industry • The concept of Value Sensitive Design (VSD) It includes a link to all the web lectures as well as case studies ranging from care robots and nuclear energy to Artificial Intelligence and self-driving vehicles.
