3D Printed Glass Fabrication and Applications

In this video, Michael Stern, artist, engineer, scientist, designer, and co-inventor of molten glass 3D printing, traces glass fabrication from traditional blowing to additive manufacturing. He shares how he first encountered glass, what drew him to 3D printing, and how his parallel passions for mechanical engineering and glassblowing eventually converged into the invention of a new process. The 3D printing process involves a printer that works by heating a crucible of molten glass, which flows through a nozzle while a build plate moves layer by layer. The object is typically built over the course of 20 minutes to two hours, depending on its size. Rather than forcing the material, Stern emphasizes that working with glass requires listening to it, as it is a "loud material" with its own opinions. He advises those learning and working with glass to break challenges into small, unremarkable steps, given that innovation is simply the result of adding those steps together over time. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Michael Stern for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

The Matter of Hospitals

This book invites readers to discover never-before-told stories of hospitals through an unusual assortment of materials, offering a unique and timely glimpse into one of society’s most feared, essential, and sensorially rich institutions. Hospitals, with their distinctive smells, acute pain, births, writhing bodies, incessant beeping, endless waiting, cardboard food and never-ending corridors, have fascinated writers for centuries. Edited by the prize-winning author of A Sensory Education and Making Sense of Medicine, this book shares a never-before-told story of hospitals through an unusual collection of objects. A great deal that matters happens in hospitals – from new life to the end of life. There is also a great deal of matter, in its material form, within hospitals. Sometimes there is too much: when we see the mountains of clinical waste with dirty syringes and used gloves. Sometimes there is too little: when we saw empty pharmacy shelves during the pandemic. More often, matter circulates in ways that are taken for granted, invisible yet critical to how hospitals function. Each essay in this book takes the matter of hospitals as a starting point to explore broader themes. Organised alphabetically, The Matter of Hospitals investigates what we can learn from the institution’s materiality about creativity, waste, patient care, community, attention and design. From ‘A’ for atmosphere to ‘Z’ for zips, each essay is a close sensory study of what seem, on the surface, to be mundane things. Beautifully illustrated with artistic photographs and hand-drawn illustrations by the editor, The Matter of Hospitals offers an inspiring and unique examination of the stuff that so many of us take for granted, in a place that we never do.

Luxottica Headquarter

In this video Nicola Greco explains the design and technical challenges of creating a fully transparent "crystal" building for the Luxottica headquarters in Milan's historical Palazzo Litta garden. The central architectural concept was achieved using a double-skin facade, which balances maximum transparency with high energy performance. Key challenges included selecting high-quality, low-iron glass with specialized coatings to minimize visual distortion and minimizing the visual impact of framing to maintain transparency. The passively ventilated double-skin facade provides a thermal buffer in winter and uses natural ventilation to remove heat in summer, with its performance validated through detailed steady-state and CFD simulations. The design also integrated innovative maintenance solutions, such as a rope access system within the cavity, to preserve the building's clean aesthetic. Special thanks to Nicola Greco for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Amateur Craft as Method-in-the-Making:

This research output documents a pandemic-era experiment in which academic researchers used knitting to record and reflect on their digital screen time, exploring craft as a critical research method and a tool for data sensitisation, feminist activism, and embodied knowledge making. Project Overview: A group of academics and amateur knitters from Maastricht University and partner institutions met online during 2020–2021, using knitting to document their own screen time over a week of lockdown. Their creative outputs—a collection of individually knitted rectangles—were later assembled as a tactile "knitted book" to display in arts and crafts contexts, as well as academic contexts. The project linked technofeminist thinking, craftivism, and artistic research practices, aiming to make visible both quantitative and qualitative aspects of technology use during social isolation. Main Topics and Learning Objectives: • Explore how amateur craftwork (knitting) can act as a research method to sensitise and interpret personal data. • Engage with concepts from technofeminism and critical craft studies to understand the role of tactile, embodied methodologies. • Foster social connection, experimentation, and reflection on digital dependency during the COVID-19 lockdown. • Develop awareness of how materials, technique, and individual interpretation shape both method and outcome in collaborative research. Audience: This work suits students, educators, and researchers interested in qualitative and artistic research methods, feminist theory, science and technology studies (STS), and creative digital-literacy pedagogies. It models interdisciplinary practice and encourages engagement with data, methodology, and making as interconnected experiential processes. Authors and Licensing: Authors: Denise Petzold (first and corresponding author), Laura Barendregt, Ruth Benschop, Anna Harris, Laudy van den Heuvel, Bernike Pasveer, Veerle Spronck, Sally Wyatt, affiliated with Maastricht University, TU Delft, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and HKU University of Arts Utrecht.
