Extreme Overtuigingen (E-learning)

Niet-pluis instrument: intervisie tool

Impact of Empire: Volume 50 | Tradition and Power in the Roman Empire

This volume focuses on the interface between tradition and the shifting configuration of power structures in the Roman Empire. By examining various time periods and locales, its contributions show the Empire as a world filed with a wide variety of cultural, political, social, and religious traditions. These traditions were constantly played upon in the processes of negotiation and (re)definition that made the empire into a superstructure whose coherence was embedded in its diversity. Contributors are: Stéphane Benoist, Sven Betjes, Lukas De Blois, Francesco Bono, Christer Bruun, Livia Capponi, Margherita Carucci, Juan Manuel Cortés Copete, Elsemieke Daalder, Sergio España-Chamorro, Amber Gartrell, Florian Groll, Nikolas Hächler, Johannes Hahn, Fernando Lozano, Erika Manders, Giorgos Mitropoulos, Elena Muñiz Grijalvo, Toni Ñaco del Hoyo, Elena Torregaray Pagola.

Byzantium & Friends | 43. Is it time to abandon the rubric “Byzantium”?, with Leonora Neville Thursday Feb 11, 2021

A conversation with Leonora Neville (University of Wisconsin) on whether the scholarly rubric "Byzantium" does more harm than good. How did it come into being? What biases and ideologies, especially in the domain of gender, does it encode? What blind-spots and distortions does it create? We discuss whether "Byzantium" enables a Eurocentric western-oriented narrative about Greece, Rome, Europe, and the Renaissance that does not want to recognize classically educated, Greek-speaking, Orthodox Romans in the east.

Sturtevant have written The Devil's Historians: How Modern Extremists Abuse the Medieval Past. They join Daniele to talk about their work and how the Middle Ages was more diverse, compelling, and complex than is often portrayed in mass media. Impact of Empire: Volume 34 | Administration, Prosopography and Appointment Policies in the Roman Empire

The Impact of Justice on the Roman Empire discusses ways in which notions, practice and the ideology of justice impacted on the functioning of the Roman Empire. The papers assembled in this volume follow from the thirteenth workshop of the international network Impact of Empire. They focus on what was considered just in various groups of Roman subjects, how these views were legitimated, shifted over time, and how they affected policy making and political, administrative, and judicial practices. Linking all of the papers are three common themes: the emperor and justice, justice in a dispersed empire and differentiation of justice.
