A Brief History of Window Glass

The video "A Brief History of Window Glass" presents an overview of production and use of glass in architecture from the 1st to the 19th century. The first attempts to shape glass window panels were recorded as early as the 1st century BC, wider application began in the first half of the 1st century, while the glass blowing techniques were more intensively practiced only from the 3rd-4th century. Each historical period has its own specifics in terms of production, and especially the way window glass is used in everyday life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar, Croatia. It is based on the exhibition "A Brief History of Window Glass" curated by Vedrana Jović Gazić, and the exhibition catalogue published by the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar. The original language of the video is Croatian. To view it with English subtitles and/or transcript, please follow the provided youtube link. The bilingual Croatian-English exhibition catalogue, as well as timecoded subtitles and video transcript in English and Croatian can also be separately downloaded. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Chemical/Laboratory Techniques: Greasing glass joints

This open video (CC-BY-NC-SA) was created by chemistry teachers of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen for use in the lab at their faculty. The description of for the video reads the following: Chemical glassware generally comes with ground joints, the opaque parts of the glassware. These joints do not form a hermetical seal whenever an inner (male) and outer (female) joint are connected. By applying a thin strip of grease (Silicon or Teflon based), you can form an air-tight seal between the joints. This is especially useful in situations where the reaction is under a different atmosphere (like Nitrogen), under a (slight) vacuum, or contains highly volatile compounds.

Chemical/Laboratory Techniques: Reflux setup

This open video (CC-BY-NC-SA) was created by chemistry teachers of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen for use in the lab at their faculty. The description of for the video reads the following: To increase the rate of reactivity, reactions are often performed at elevated temperatures. However, simple organic compounds and solvents often have a low boiling point. As such, most organic chemicals are quite volatile, and if heated they will evaporate and be lost. The solution to this problem is to heat the reaction mixture under reflux. Reflux involves heating the chemical reaction for a specific amount of time, while continually cooling the vapour that is produced back into its liquid form. A condenser is used for cooling the vapour. The setup demonstrated in this video can be extended upon with various other pieces of glassware to suit the needs of your reaction.
