Curved Glass: An Industry Perspective

In this video, Ferran Figuerola, a third-generation leader of the nearly century-old family business Cricursa, traces curved glass from its traditional flat origins to its role in ambitious architectural facades. Curved glass is unique because it adapts to complex geometries, becoming exceptionally stiff and capable of resisting wind loads while offering dynamic light effects that change with the angle of light. Key challenges center on both manufacturing and logistics. The process requires specialized ovens, careful heat treatment choices, and precise molding or quenching techniques. Installing curved glass is trickier than flat glass because its three-dimensional shape demands specialized equipment and careful prediction of how the glass will behave when lifted or inclined. Beyond production, storing and shipping these unstable curved forms adds further difficulty. Figuerola emphasizes that despite nearly a century of shared experience, every day brings new learning opportunities and challenges. He explains how to anticipate unpredictable costs by accounting for risks and uncertainties in production. In extreme cases, five production attempts may yield solely one success. Yet surprises can go both ways: a complex glass ladder and slide created for Glasstec in Düsseldorf succeeded on the very first try, defying his own cautious expectations. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Ferran Figuerola and Cricursa for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Float Glass: Secondary Glass Manufactoring and Mechanical Properties

In this video Mauro Overend explains how annealed glass is strengthened after its initial production. The primary method is thermal treatment, known as tempering or toughening, where the glass is heated and then rapidly cooled. This process creates internal stresses, putting the outer surfaces in compression and the inner core in tension, which significantly increases the glass's strength. There are two grades: fully-toughened (tempered) glass, which is 3-4 times stronger than annealed glass and breaks into small, less hazardous fragments, and heat-strengthened glass, which is about twice as strong but breaks into larger, sharper shards. The video also covers lamination, a process where two or more glass sheets are bonded with an interlayer (like PVB or SentryGlas®) using heat and pressure. Laminated glass holds together when broken, preventing injuries from falling shards and providing post-fracture resistance, which is essential for safety applications like balustrades and overhead glazing. These secondary processes are crucial for improving the strength and safety of glass in architectural applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Defects and Fracture Mechanics

In this video, Daniel Trias Mansilla explains the fundamental differences between brittle materials like glass and ductile materials like metals. While typically seen as brittle and fragile, glass has become a reliable structural material thanks to advancements in engineering and manufacturing. The key difference is that ductile materials can absorb energy through plastic deformation (bending without breaking), providing a safety warning before failure. In contrast, brittle materials like glass cannot deform plastically; they can only dissipate energy through crack growth. The strength of glass is not determined by its atomic bonds but by the presence of small defects like surface scratches, edge flaws, or inclusions. These defects cause a "stress singularity," where stresses become theoretically infinite at the tip of a sharp crack, making traditional stress analysis unreliable. The field of Fracture Mechanics is used to understand how cracks behave under different loading modes (I, II, and III) and to design and predict the load-bearing capability of glass. To improve strength, engineers must understand this relationship, and manufacturers must work to reduce the number and size of defects in the glass. Sidonius Apollinaris: Your Research Companion

This website focuses on Gaius Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius, a fifth-century Gallo-Roman aristocrat, high official, poet, letter writer, and bishop of Clermont (Auvergne) – a key figure in the transition of the later Roman Empire to the early Middle Ages and the dawn of Europe as we know it. It provides news on publications, conferences, and scholars in this field. Its fellow website on the Propylaeum platform contains materials for the study of Sidonius, featuring, among other things, an up-to-date bibliography, references to manuscripts and an overview of his reception.

Podcast as examination

The materials we share here were made for the 2023-2024 course "Wicked Legal Ethics" at Erasmus School of Law, but the podcast has been used as examination in different courses. The podcast examination is a very useful method for allowing students to develop critical reflection and creative expression. The podcast is a partial group examination, to be combined with individual testing. Testing every student on an individual level on course content before the creative podcast process, puts every group member on an equal footing and provides them with the confidence to enter into constructive and critical discussions with their fellow students. The podcast has been discussed in M. Luth-Morgan et al, “Chat-GPT als katalysator voor meer authentieke toetsing: praktijkvoorbeelden uit het ethiekonderwijs” Ars Aequi sept 2024 (Dutch).

Fracture Mechanics: An Engineering Primer

In this second edition, which is the result of numerous revisions, updates and additions, the authors cover the basic concepts of fracture mechanics for both the linear elastic and elastic-plastic regimes. The fracture mechanics parameters K, G, J and CTOD are treated in a basic manner along with the test methods to determine critical values. The development of failure assessment based on elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is reflected in a comprehensive treatment. Three chapters are devoted to the fracture mechanics characterisation of crack growth. Fatigue crack growth is extensively treated and attention is paid to the important topic of the initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks. Furthermore, sustained load fracture and dynamic crack growth are discussed, including various test techniques, e.g. the determination of the crack arrest toughness.
