Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

Elements of Airplane Performance

Elements of Airplane Performance provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles governing the flight performance of fixed-wing aircraft. After covering fundamental concepts related to atmospheric properties, equations of motion, aerodynamics, propeller and jet propulsion, electric powertrains, and flight instrumentation, the book guides its readers through the analysis of performance in steady and accelerated flight. Detailed chapters are dedicated to the most important flight phases: climb and descent (including gliding), cruise, take-off and landing, turning and maneuvering flight. Both point and path performance are covered, and the effect of aircraft design parameters, as well as operational parameters like weight, altitude, and local atmospheric conditions, are discussed. Appendices offer essential background in mechanics, coordinate systems and transformations, fluid dynamics, and a standard atmosphere model. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter.

Bomb Blast Testing

In this video, Andrej Vorkapić details the engineering and testing processes behind bomb blast-resistant facades, explaining that such protection is needed for public buildings and high-risk sites due to threats from terrorism, military action, or accidental industrial explosions. The main danger is the air shock wave from a blast, characterized by its peak pressure and impulse. A successful facade must protect occupants and the main structure, prevent pressure penetration, and—critically—not generate hazardous fragments. While frames can be made from ductile materials like steel or aluminum, the brittle nature of glass is overcome by using laminated glass with a PVB interlayer, which holds the broken pieces in place. The most reliable validation method is physical testing, with two primary types discussed: the cost-effective but incomplete shock tube test and the expensive but highly realistic range test, which was successfully demonstrated on a full-scale sample designed to withstand a 200kg TNT car bomb simulation. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Andrej Vorkapić and Nebojša Buljan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. A Novel Approach to Artificial Fracture Pattern Generation

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Leon Bohmann, from TU Darmstadt, focuses on the problem of spontaneously broken glass, specifically how it fractures into numerous fragments, a process which is not yet fully understood and currently requires expensive physical testing for safety validation. The speaker proposes a numerical simulation approach to predict these fracture patterns. By analyzing over 130 experiments, key data on fragment orientation and intensity relative to the impact point was gathered. The simulation method involves randomly distributing points based on this data, placing ellipses on them, and then using a watershed algorithm to generate realistic fracture patterns. The results show a promising visual and statistical match to actual broken glass, offering a potential alternative to costly physical tests. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Leon Bohmann for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Glass in Facade Systems

In this video, Francesco Carlucci outlines the primary glass facade systems for buildings. The video distinguishes between traditional windows, set within opaque walls, and larger curtain walls. Curtain walls are categorized into three types: stick systems (built on-site from a metal grid), unitized systems (prefabricated modules assembled on-site), and structural glass facades (which use point fixings to create a seamless, all-glass appearance by hiding the load-bearing structure). Each system offers different advantages in cost, aesthetics, installation speed, and performance, allowing designers to choose the best solution for a project's specific architectural and technical needs. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Francesco Carlucci for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
