Adaptive Expertise Assessment

Week 2: Analysing a Case

Around an inspiring video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. Essential case-solving techniques to help students tackle complex real-world problems, are being introduced and trained. The instructors explain that effective analysis goes beyond listing facts—it’s about uncovering insights that address the “so what” question. Key methods covered include critical thinking, analytical frameworks (like VRIO, Porter’s 5 Forces, and GAP analysis), and the 5 WHY technique for identifying root causes. Using a concrete case example, they show how a deeper issue—ineffective communication—was the true cause of low user engagement. By the end of this lesson, students understand how to structure their analysis, avoid common mistakes, and use insights to drive solution development.

RElastiCity: een stedelijk veerkrachtig spel

NOTE: This is the Dutch version of RElastiCity: An urban resilience game. It includes showcases of actual use in real world settings (including in the Healthcare Domain). For the English version of the game, please see the related materials.

Publication strategies & Open Access: Choosing a journal to publish in

Choosing a journal to publish in Where will you publish your next journal article? With thousands of journals available it can be hard to find the right journal for your work. At the bottom of this page you can find an overview of tools that can help you create a 'shortlist' of journals to publish in. Some disciplines or research schools have developed journal lists, providing an overview of the journals most relevant to them. Aims & scope After creating a shortlist of suitable journals you need to check the aims and scope of the journals. Open Access options When choosing a journal the options to publish in Open Access can be important as well. All EUR-researchers are required to make their publications Open Access and most research funders have adopted policies that make Open Access publishing mandatory. AAbstracting and indexing information Where is the journal indexed? In other words: in which databases will researchers and students be able to find your article in their search results? Are these multidisciplinary databases, like Scopus or Web of Science, and/or discipline specific databases like EconLit, ERIC, PsycINFO or Sociological Abstracts? Are these databases you and your peers use? Tools to find journals to publish in Several tools have been developed to help you find suitable journals: these tools allow you to upload title, abstract and/or keywords of your article and – using data of articles already published - matching journals are shown. Some of these tools are publisher specific, others are publisher neutral. Journal lists Some disciplines and schools have created list of journals to publish in. These list are sometimes also used to evaluate researchers. Suggested.

Measuring academic impact: Tracking your research impact: sources & metrics

Tracking your research impact Research impact can be measured in many ways. Citation databases and alternative metric tools can be used to assess the output and impact of an individual’s paper or body of work. Three main bibliometric sources Various tools are available to identify a range of bibliometrics. Alternative sources and metrics Certain disciplines, journals, and document types may not be well represented in the more traditional sources for citation analysis, such as Web of Science and Scopus. Limitations There has been much debate about the use of bibliometrics in academia. Support The Research Evaluation and Assessment Service (REAS) team of the University Library - member of the Research Intelligence Community EUR - is available to consult with faculty and staff about measuring research impact. Doing the literature review: Using a database thesaurus

Using a database thesaurus A thesaurus is a list of terms used in databases to give consistent labels to articles which describe the same concept, but in a variety of ways. What is a thesaurus? A thesaurus is a list of terms, structured hierarchically, showing.... broader - more general terms, narrower - more specific term, and related terms. You will also see ‘Use for’ terms: they can be useful to translate ‘lay terms’ into scholarly terms. The integrative power of sport: Imagined and real effects of sport events on multicultural integration. Sociology of Sport Journal, 25(3), 387-401. Exercise: Using a database thesaurus. Related. Research Data Management: Research data management

Research data management Research data management (RDM) is an important topic with increasing relevance for academics. Due to recent examples of researchers committing fraud by falsifying or manipulating research data, this topic has attracted a lot of attention. These examples of fraud resulted in a Taskforce Scientific Integrity at the EUR, which recommended the introduction of research data management for researchers. For students, it has led to stricter supervision and attention to plagiarism. Benefits Basic elements of data management In each stage of the research life cycle different requirements are identified. Related. Suggested.
