The Matter of Hospitals

This book invites readers to discover never-before-told stories of hospitals through an unusual assortment of materials, offering a unique and timely glimpse into one of society’s most feared, essential, and sensorially rich institutions. Hospitals, with their distinctive smells, acute pain, births, writhing bodies, incessant beeping, endless waiting, cardboard food and never-ending corridors, have fascinated writers for centuries. Edited by the prize-winning author of A Sensory Education and Making Sense of Medicine, this book shares a never-before-told story of hospitals through an unusual collection of objects. A great deal that matters happens in hospitals – from new life to the end of life. There is also a great deal of matter, in its material form, within hospitals. Sometimes there is too much: when we see the mountains of clinical waste with dirty syringes and used gloves. Sometimes there is too little: when we saw empty pharmacy shelves during the pandemic. More often, matter circulates in ways that are taken for granted, invisible yet critical to how hospitals function. Each essay in this book takes the matter of hospitals as a starting point to explore broader themes. Organised alphabetically, The Matter of Hospitals investigates what we can learn from the institution’s materiality about creativity, waste, patient care, community, attention and design. From ‘A’ for atmosphere to ‘Z’ for zips, each essay is a close sensory study of what seem, on the surface, to be mundane things. Beautifully illustrated with artistic photographs and hand-drawn illustrations by the editor, The Matter of Hospitals offers an inspiring and unique examination of the stuff that so many of us take for granted, in a place that we never do.

An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Amateur Craft as Method-in-the-Making:

This research output documents a pandemic-era experiment in which academic researchers used knitting to record and reflect on their digital screen time, exploring craft as a critical research method and a tool for data sensitisation, feminist activism, and embodied knowledge making. Project Overview: A group of academics and amateur knitters from Maastricht University and partner institutions met online during 2020–2021, using knitting to document their own screen time over a week of lockdown. Their creative outputs—a collection of individually knitted rectangles—were later assembled as a tactile "knitted book" to display in arts and crafts contexts, as well as academic contexts. The project linked technofeminist thinking, craftivism, and artistic research practices, aiming to make visible both quantitative and qualitative aspects of technology use during social isolation. Main Topics and Learning Objectives: • Explore how amateur craftwork (knitting) can act as a research method to sensitise and interpret personal data. • Engage with concepts from technofeminism and critical craft studies to understand the role of tactile, embodied methodologies. • Foster social connection, experimentation, and reflection on digital dependency during the COVID-19 lockdown. • Develop awareness of how materials, technique, and individual interpretation shape both method and outcome in collaborative research. Audience: This work suits students, educators, and researchers interested in qualitative and artistic research methods, feminist theory, science and technology studies (STS), and creative digital-literacy pedagogies. It models interdisciplinary practice and encourages engagement with data, methodology, and making as interconnected experiential processes. Authors and Licensing: Authors: Denise Petzold (first and corresponding author), Laura Barendregt, Ruth Benschop, Anna Harris, Laudy van den Heuvel, Bernike Pasveer, Veerle Spronck, Sally Wyatt, affiliated with Maastricht University, TU Delft, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and HKU University of Arts Utrecht. The text is suitable for publication in open educational repositories and supports open, collaborative engagement with academic craftwork. The pictures of the digitised version of the book were taken by Eric Bleize. Open Mind game

Open Mind is a digital 20-30 minute game that can be played on any smartphone or tablet. It offers a structured and engaging environment that challenges players’ assumptions and encourages them to reflect on their own experiences, question their assumptions, and explore diverse perspectives in a safe and interactive way. One can choose to have students play the game in class in class mode and include a plenary introduction and a post-play reflection, or one can have students play the game individually at home or at another location. When played on campus, the activity (game, introduction, and reflection) takes approximately 45 minutes in total. It could be used as a first introduction to perspective-taking and uncovering prejudices, priming students to be more open to participate in follow-up activities like perspective-taking exercises and dialogues. Open Mind was developed as part of the Utrecht University Comenius project Fostering an Open Mind and Open Attitude in Higher Education that strives to stimulate perspective-taking and dialogue in academic education with creative learning activities. Other learning activities that have been developed as part of this project are Playing perspectives (a game design toolkit) and The Square (Het Vlak; a creative dialogue methodology).

Maintaining Classroom Management

In this report, the design of a blueprint for learning classroom management is presented. This program will be designed for pre-service lower secondary school teachers in the Netherlands (age group 11 to 16-year-old students; 2e graads in Dutch). These teachers are completing a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area and take a six-month minor in which they receive pedagogical and didactical training to be prepared for teaching in secondary schools. This minor is accompanied by an internship in which the pre-service teachers put their skills into practice.Although the minor allots extensive attention to classroom management, teachers often struggle to manage both class and content. This is understandable as, although classroom management can be learned with the right amount of practice and support, mastery of classroom management skills takes around four years on average takes. To guide pre-service teachers well on their way towards mastering classroom management, a rigorous and evidence-based approach to teaching classroom management to pre-service teachers is needed. An evidence-based approach should allow for a productive and enjoyable learning process for pre-service teachers. One well-studied approach is found in the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model which offers an evidence-based approach to teaching complex skills. This paper adapts the 4C/ID model and applies it to the skill of classroom management for pre-service teachers in the Netherlands.
