Mind Measuring Mind

Mind Measuring Mind explores the foundations of psychological methodology, ethical research practice, and the pivotal role of measurement in understanding behaviour and mental processes. Blending teaching material, scholarly context, and personal perspective, it opens a dialogue about the challenges and responsibilities of doing science when the subject and the scientist share the same mind. Why is psychological science different from other sciences? Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike most other fields, psychologists use their own mental processes to examine those of others. This self-referential nature, “mind measuring mind,” brings unique challenges for psychological measurement and the interpretation of research results. This book critically examines psychology as a science, exploring the empirical cycle and the teaching of methodology and statistics. In most academic psychology programmes, students are expected to participate as subjects in psychological studies. To support this, a series of PBL tutorials was developed to familiarise students with the empirical cycle and encourage discussion of validity, research methods, ethical standards, scientific communication, and potential threats to responsible, high-quality research. The materials in this book are based on those tutorials. This open textbook is designed for first- and second-year BSc Psychology students at Maastricht University, particularly those navigating the renewed curriculum’s emphasis on ‘Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking’ (SICT). It serves as a flexible guide for students following individual learning paths, including participation in faculty-led research experiments, reflection on the empirical cycle, and connecting practical experiences to theoretical concepts such as methodology, statistics, validity, ethics, and scientific communication. Ideal for self-study, group PBL sessions, and research practicums, the book helps bridge hands-on research involvement with classroom discussions, supporting competency development in psychological research.

ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Bomb Blast Testing

In this video, Andrej Vorkapić details the engineering and testing processes behind bomb blast-resistant facades, explaining that such protection is needed for public buildings and high-risk sites due to threats from terrorism, military action, or accidental industrial explosions. The main danger is the air shock wave from a blast, characterized by its peak pressure and impulse. A successful facade must protect occupants and the main structure, prevent pressure penetration, and—critically—not generate hazardous fragments. While frames can be made from ductile materials like steel or aluminum, the brittle nature of glass is overcome by using laminated glass with a PVB interlayer, which holds the broken pieces in place. The most reliable validation method is physical testing, with two primary types discussed: the cost-effective but incomplete shock tube test and the expensive but highly realistic range test, which was successfully demonstrated on a full-scale sample designed to withstand a 200kg TNT car bomb simulation. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Andrej Vorkapić and Nebojša Buljan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Luxottica Headquarter

In this video Nicola Greco explains the design and technical challenges of creating a fully transparent "crystal" building for the Luxottica headquarters in Milan's historical Palazzo Litta garden. The central architectural concept was achieved using a double-skin facade, which balances maximum transparency with high energy performance. Key challenges included selecting high-quality, low-iron glass with specialized coatings to minimize visual distortion and minimizing the visual impact of framing to maintain transparency. The passively ventilated double-skin facade provides a thermal buffer in winter and uses natural ventilation to remove heat in summer, with its performance validated through detailed steady-state and CFD simulations. The design also integrated innovative maintenance solutions, such as a rope access system within the cavity, to preserve the building's clean aesthetic. Comparative Analysis of the Glass Plate Design

In this video, Ivana Rakić presents a comparative analysis of the economic impact of designing glass elements according to different standards, focusing on the new European draft standard FprEN 19100-1(2,3):2023, the existing EN 16612:2019, and the American ASTM E1300-16. The study examines common double-glazed insulating units under wind load, using the minimal required glass thickness for loadbearing resistance as the key comparison criterion. The results indicate that for annealed glass, all three standards yield similar economic outcomes. However, for heat-treated glass like heat-strengthened and thermally toughened glass, the new FprEN 19100 standard leads to a lower capacity utilisation factor, making it the most economical design choice, while the ASTM standard is the least economical. The analysis concludes that the choice of standard significantly influences design economy and highlights the need for further research incorporating factors like safety and long-term performance for a more comprehensive understanding. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Ivana Rakić and Nebojša Buljan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Interactive Optics – 2nd edition

This book treats optics at the level of students in the later stage of their bachelor or the beginning of their master. It is assumed that the student is familiar with Maxwell’s equations. Although the book takes account of the fact that optics is part of electromagnetism, special emphasis is put on the usefulness of approximate models of optics, their hierarchy and limits of validity. Approximate models such as geometrical optics and paraxial geometrical optics are treated extensively and applied to image formation by the human eye, the microscope and the telescope. Polarisation states and how to manipulate them are studied using Jones vectors and Jones matrices. In the context of interference, the coherence of light is explained thoroughly. To understand fundamental limits of resolution which cannot be explained by geometrical optics, diffraction theory is applied to imaging. The angular spectrum method and evanescent waves are used to understand the inherent loss of information about subwavelength features during the propagation of light. The book ends with a study of the working principle of the laser.
