ACA-bot

ACA-bot is an engaging chatbot designed for Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA). Drawing inspiration from traditional oral exams, this text-based conversational agent transforms assessment into a dynamic learning experience. It supports both formative and summative evaluation by offering students personalised feedback and guidance at every step of their learning journey. The first ACA-bot prototype focuses on assessing students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, but its flexible design allows for easy adaptation to a wide range of subjects and learning contexts. Through interactive dialogue, students can practise explaining ideas clearly under exam-like conditions, apply their knowledge to new and challenging questions, and refine their reasoning as they respond to follow-up prompts. They gain valuable insights into their own understanding, identify areas for improvement, and gradually build confidence for both oral and written assessments. For educators, ACA-bot offers a powerful way to scale oral examinations and enhance formative assessment without increasing workload. It automates parts of the assessment process, provides structured and actionable insights into student performance, and opens the door to more personal, interactive feedback at scale. By combining the strengths of conversational AI and educational assessment, ACA-bot turns evaluation into a collaborative, insightful process. It empowers students to think aloud, reason more effectively, and grow, while giving educators a smarter, more innovative way to understand and support learning.

ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Linear Algebra Card Game

The Linear Algebra Card Game is an educational game for 2 to 6 players to learn about key concepts and surprising connections in linear algebra. It’s designed especially for students of linear algebra courses in science and engineering faculties and provides an engaging way to review and reinforce course concepts inside or outside the classroom. Players take turns by placing cards in the middle of the table in a grid-like structure, explaining how the concept on their card connects to other cards in the grid. Each successful explanation, judged by the other players, earns points. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins the game!

Fracture Mechanics Fundamentals

In this video, Daniel Trias Mansilla explains the core principles of fracture mechanics, which provides an alternative to traditional stress analysis by accounting for the inherent cracks and defects in real materials. The field introduces two main criteria for predicting failure. The first is an energy-based approach, using the energy release rate (G), which measures the energy available to propagate a crack. The second is a stress-based approach, using the stress intensity factor (K), which characterizes the intense stress field near a crack tip. Fracture occurs when either of these values reaches a critical threshold (Gc or Kc), which are material properties known as fracture toughness. These concepts allow engineers to predict failure in flawed components more accurately than traditional methods. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Glass Sustainability: Reduce

In this video Mauro Overend and Rebecca Hartwell outline strategies to meet EU net-zero targets by addressing both demand-side and supply-side emissions. Demand-side approaches, influenced by designers, include using less material through efficient structural design, relaxing deflection limits to allow for thinner glass, and improving building energy performance with high-performance glazing. A key focus is increasing the use of recycled glass cullet, which can reduce melting energy and process emissions, though current post-consumer cullet use remains below 5%. Supply-side approaches involve the glass industry switching to low-carbon energy sources like hydrogen or electricity and exploring alternative raw materials to reduce process emissions. The video concludes that a combination of smarter design, increased recycling, and cleaner production is essential for reducing the glass sector's environmental footprint.
