Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Collaboration and Personal Development

In this reader, a teaching programme (assignments, underlying models and theories) is described to develop collaborative skills in a transdisciplinary-oriented educational context in between science and society. The focus lies on creating awareness about mechamisms that promote pleasurability, effectiveness and responsibility in professional collaborative practices. The MSc course for which it was created, is called Academic Consultancy Training, taught at Wageningen University and Research

Teaching & learning for a better future: Education for sustainable development (ESD)

This is a brief introduction to the topic of Sustainable Development in higher education teaching create for teachers. It touches on three areas: 1) Why all higher education teachers should know about sustainable development & should implement ESD into their own teaching. 2) How you, irrespective of your discipline, can address the topic sustainable development in your own teaching. 3) Places where you can find more information & teaching resources.

Luxottica Headquarter

In this video Nicola Greco explains the design and technical challenges of creating a fully transparent "crystal" building for the Luxottica headquarters in Milan's historical Palazzo Litta garden. The central architectural concept was achieved using a double-skin facade, which balances maximum transparency with high energy performance. Key challenges included selecting high-quality, low-iron glass with specialized coatings to minimize visual distortion and minimizing the visual impact of framing to maintain transparency. The passively ventilated double-skin facade provides a thermal buffer in winter and uses natural ventilation to remove heat in summer, with its performance validated through detailed steady-state and CFD simulations. The design also integrated innovative maintenance solutions, such as a rope access system within the cavity, to preserve the building's clean aesthetic. Special thanks to Nicola Greco for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750. Collage-making for self-discovery in engineering ethics

This creative exercise enables students to discover, reflect and express their emotions in relation to engineering. In this way, the exercise enables self-understanding through an encounter with one’s own feelings and intuitions and serves as a starting point for better ethical deliberation and well-being. Learning goals: • Expanding moral sensibility (being aware of their own emotions, values and norms) • Stimulating moral creativity and imagination

Maintaining Classroom Management

In this report, the design of a blueprint for learning classroom management is presented. This program will be designed for pre-service lower secondary school teachers in the Netherlands (age group 11 to 16-year-old students; 2e graads in Dutch). These teachers are completing a bachelor’s degree in a specific subject area and take a six-month minor in which they receive pedagogical and didactical training to be prepared for teaching in secondary schools. This minor is accompanied by an internship in which the pre-service teachers put their skills into practice.Although the minor allots extensive attention to classroom management, teachers often struggle to manage both class and content. This is understandable as, although classroom management can be learned with the right amount of practice and support, mastery of classroom management skills takes around four years on average takes. To guide pre-service teachers well on their way towards mastering classroom management, a rigorous and evidence-based approach to teaching classroom management to pre-service teachers is needed. An evidence-based approach should allow for a productive and enjoyable learning process for pre-service teachers. One well-studied approach is found in the Four Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model which offers an evidence-based approach to teaching complex skills. This paper adapts the 4C/ID model and applies it to the skill of classroom management for pre-service teachers in the Netherlands.
