ShareXR : Challenge-Based Learning with XR (BMS Lab, University of Twente)

ShareXR introduces a challenge-based learning (CBL) approach for integrating research, design, and development in engineering education through extended reality (XR). Developed at the University of Twente’s BMS Lab, the model addresses the increasing need for multidisciplinary collaboration by teaching students to speak a shared language across research, design, and technical development. Even for those without an engineering, scientific or STEM background. This course offers a hands-on, multidisciplinary learning experience where students take real research ideas and transform them into innovation projects within a complete and validated open learning XR ecosystem. With reusable multimedia course content, the course enables students to understand interdisciplinary collaboration, while each module focuses on one of the four pillars: Research, Design, Development, and Project Management — guided by principles of balance, iteration, and collaboration. By working with different tools like one-page project canvases, students will learn how to translate research ideas into structured user stories, requirements, and project management tasks, while exploring how XR tools can act as a human-centered medium for prototyping, testing, and validating ideas without requiring coding skills.

Quick and dirty multilevel regression with SPSS syntax assignment

SPSS syntax assignment for teaching the basics of multilevel modeling. For when you need to teach or learn the basics but don't have a lot of time for it. Covers pooled OLS, fixed-effects and random effects (null model, intraclass-correlation, random intercept models with covariates at different levels, random slope models, and cross-level interactions). Uses European Social Survey data. Includes questions. Intended to be used in conjunction with a preceeding lecture.

Programming Foundations

This introductory programming book offers a hands-on approach to learning Python, designed specifically for students of natural sciences who wish to enter the world of coding. Covering fundamental programming concepts - from variables and data types to functions and loops - the book presents examples and exercises rooted in applications across biology, physics, and mathematics. In addition to Python fundamentals, readers also build good practices of programming and working with computers, such as using the terminal, navigating an integrated development environment, tracking changes with Git, and writing pseudocode. Moreover, the book addresses how to usage generative AI tools effectively when learning the basics of programming. Through hands-on learning, each chapter builds both confidence and competence, guiding students from simple scripts to more complex code. By the end of the book, students will not only understand Python’s core principles but also have the skills and tools to tackle real coding challenges within their scientific disciplines in the age of AI.

GenAI Literacy presentations

These PowerPoints are designed to provide teachers the means to improve their students' AI literacy. The presentation is divided into seven themes: 1: What is Generative AI? 2: How does Generative AI work? 3: Prompting 4: GenAI and hallucinations (in development) 5: GenAI and bias 6: GenAI and sustainability 7: Gen AI and privacy/ bias Each topic includes a section focusing on traditional knowledgetransfer and a simple, active learning method. This material is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Created by the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) of UvA Centraal in collaboration with the TLC of the Faculty of Medicine.

Intro to Open Science

Created for the GSLS Master introduction Days 2025, Utrecht University. This lecture will introduce you to the principles and practices of Open Science, a global movement aimed at making scientific research more accessible, transparent, and collaborative. You will learn why open science matters for accelerating discoveries, improving research quality, and enhancing reproducibility. Key topics include open access publishing, open and FAIR data, preprints, open peer review, and sharing research tools and methods. The session will also cover practical tips on how you can integrate open science practices into your own research from the start of your graduate journey. By embracing open science, you contribute to a more inclusive and impactful scientific community.

A virtual research cruise to characterise the North Sea water system

In this assignment you will learn to set up your own virtual research cruise, during which you will ‘measure’ biophysical oceanographic properties and analyse them. The ocean is not an easy place to perform measurements. It covers a vast area, is not always easy to access (think about the deep ocean), and measuring comes with obstacles. We’re bound by shiptime (which is expensive), the types of instruments that are available (they may break), the weather (storms), sea-ice, seasickness… As research cruises are time consuming and costly, it is important to plan very well. One tool that can help scientists in planning their cruise is VirtualShip. In this assignment, you will use VirtualShip and design a measurement campaign in the North-West European Shelf region, aimed at measuring a cross-section from the open ocean, via the North Sea, towards the coast of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. Included is a rubric for grading the student reports.
