Game Development with Students

The project Game Development with Students introduces interested educators to an innovative teaching tool with practical insights from the international relations classroom. Game development with students is a specialized form of game-based and project-based learning. It incentivizes both student creativity and in-class student-teacher co-creation and enables a particularly participative and result-oriented approach to the subject matter. The method is thematically flexible enough to travel across different fields of study and is adaptable to different levels of complexity. To enable other educators to implement this innovative teaching tool, we develop instructional materials (an educators handbook as well as educational videos), providing both general information on the experiential, game-based learning theory undergirding the method as well as practical, hands-on tips and trick on how to implement it in different educational settings. In doing so, we address the important, interconnected educational challenges of the transferability and sustainability of teacher developed tools.

The Medieval Podcast | Medieval Infancy with Julie Singer

One of the most celebrated moments in childhood is when a person utters their very first words, stepping over a brand new threshold of communication. And from that moment on, all bets are off. This week, Daniele speaks with Julie Singer about what medieval people thought about infancy in general, how literary children could be vehicles for truth and justice, and how even in the Middle Ages kids were known to say the darnedest things. The Rest Is History | 422. Ancient Carthage: Rise of a Superpower (Part 2)

“An aristocratic republic, secret and well-ordered, where individuals are subject to the harsh laws of the austere and disciplined rich…” The mysterious, wealthy and glamorous city of Carthage flourished between the ninth and second centuries BC, becoming one of the greatest naval and mercantile powers in the world. By the sixth century BC the Carthaginians were a force to be reckoned with, holding off assaults from various Greek rivals, and starting to colonise larger parts of the Mediterranean. Where once there had been a barren wasteland, now stood glittering villas and temples, bustling marketplaces, and vast walls stretching down to the sea. Yet Carthage also had a reputation for violence and cruelty. Bloody human offerings were made to the gods, with hundreds of Carthaginian children cast into the flames, whilst crucifixion was often inflicted on generals who fell short of Carthage’s exacting standards… Join Tom and Dominic as they explore the extraordinary rise of Carthage, a city of blazing innovation and sinister mystique. By the third century BC it seemed that no power could ever rival it. But little did the Carthaginians know that another city, a minnow from an Italian backwater, was on the rise. A city that may even one day challenge her supremacy: Rome. Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor
