Pressure Cooker Interdisciplinary Research Process (IRP)

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to the Interdisciplinary Research Process (IRP) by Repko & Szostak (2021). This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with interdisciplinary research and have them experience the integration process themselves. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with the IRP, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size) . Why – Guided training in integration of disciplinary insights. How long – Approximately 3 hours.

Air Safety Investigation: The Journey

"Air Safety Investigation – The Journey" is an introductory book that explores the world of air safety investigation. Unlike a how-to manual for investigating aviation accidents, this book focuses on the essential knowledge and mindset required to conduct a safety investigation. It covers the various phases of an investigation, from gathering facts to formulating safety recommendations, with each chapter addressing a different relevant aspect. With the increasing complexity of investigations, critical thinking, logic, and speculation are essential skills for investigators to possess. This book delves into these topics, offering thought-provoking examples and questions to address the challenges of drawing conclusions and obtaining positive investigative outcomes. Its aim is to help students and readers interested in air safety develop the necessary mindset and knowledge to conduct an investigation. By the end of the book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in an air safety investigation.

Quantitative Methods and Statistics

This is an introductory textbook on Quantitative Methods and Statistics, developed and used at Utrecht University (Linguistics) for the humanities. This book offers an overview of and introduction into the most important quantitative methods and statistical techniques used in the humanities. The book provides a solid methodological foundation for quantitative research, and it introduces the most commonly used statistical techniques to describe data and to test hypotheses. This will also enable the reader to critically evaluate such quantitative research. This textbook is being used as a basic textbook in introductory courses in quantitative methods and statistics at Utrecht University. The book is also highly suitable for self-study at a basic level, for everybody who wishes to learn more about quantitative methods and statistics. The main text has been kept free of mathematical derivations and formulas. The explanations are rather conceptual, and rich in examples. Where necessary derivations and formulas are presented in separate sections. This book also contains instructions on how to “do” the statistical analyses and visualisations, using the three statistical packages SPSS, JASP, and R. These instructions too are in separate sections.

Smartphones and Social Media - Raging Against the Machine

In this CBE, students will reflect on the most topical example of disruptive technologies in our time: the technological object ‘smartphone’ and our dominant mode of behaviour in relation with it: social media. We will look at several examples of the ways in which these innovations transformed the face of the Earth in the past decade. In this CBE, students will carry out several active assignments of reflection and make their own podcast from the future.
