A virtual research cruise to characterise the North Sea water system

In this assignment you will learn to set up your own virtual research cruise, during which you will ‘measure’ biophysical oceanographic properties and analyse them. The ocean is not an easy place to perform measurements. It covers a vast area, is not always easy to access (think about the deep ocean), and measuring comes with obstacles. We’re bound by shiptime (which is expensive), the types of instruments that are available (they may break), the weather (storms), sea-ice, seasickness… As research cruises are time consuming and costly, it is important to plan very well. One tool that can help scientists in planning their cruise is VirtualShip. In this assignment, you will use VirtualShip and design a measurement campaign in the North-West European Shelf region, aimed at measuring a cross-section from the open ocean, via the North Sea, towards the coast of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. Included is a rubric for grading the student reports.

How To Write A Quantitative Research Paper

So, you need to write a ‘quantitative’ research paper, and you want to know: what is the correct way of writing such a paper? The answer is, unfortunately: it depends … For one, there is no universally accepted, ‘correct’ way of writing any paper in the social sciences in general. Moreover, even just within the so-called ‘quantitative’ research tradition specifically, there exist different viewpoints on what makes for a good research paper. To muddy things up even further, how to write a paper will also depend on the specific research question(s) that it addresses. Hence, even the same scientist might opt for varying approaches in different papers. Having said that, it is possible to identify some common rules and practices that are often followed, as well as a number of practices that should generally be avoided. Based on these common rules and practices, this document is meant to help you on your way with writing a ‘quantitative’ research paper by offering a number of tips, tricks and rules-of-thumb. None of these rules and practices are set in stone, and you (or your teacher/supervisor) may have excellent arguments to deviate from them. However, in general, following them will greatly increase the quality of your paper.

Week 8: Organising a Case Competition

This final, high-energy lesson—or event—is all about case-solving competitions between students. Format, rules, and possible schedules are all part of this concluding session. A case competition is an inspiring and effective way to conclude a case-cracking training series. It gives students the opportunity to apply their skills in a high-pressure, real-world setting that fosters focus, teamwork, and clear communication under time constraints. Competitions not only allow for immediate feedback and continuous improvement but also mirror the dynamics of real consulting work, where firms compete for projects. Whether students solve a live business challenge or a simulated case, involving industry professionals as judges adds authenticity and depth to the experience. Including a final round enhances learning for all participants—both those presenting and those observing—and helps generate visibility and excitement around the program, inspiring future engagement.

Week 5: The special Role of Finance

Around an informative video, a lesson has been built with specific learning objectives, activities, and supporting materials for students. In clear language and step by step, it is explained why finance plays an important role in the case-solving process. Since students often find this challenging, a separate lesson is dedicated to this managerial area. Students learn how to integrate financial reasoning into their analysis and recommendations, even when limited data is available. Key topics include identifying revenue streams, estimating costs, projecting financial outcomes, and evaluating risk. With a focus on practical tools like forecasting, ROI, and risk matrices, this lesson helps students build confidence in using finance to strengthen their case arguments and support strategic decisions.

A value sensitive analysis of 13 cases in ICT ethics

The exercise proposes a step-by-step activity in which students will perform a value sensitive design analysis of 13 cases related to computer sciences/ ICT technologies. Students are asked to analyse a technology case in small groups. They are asked to identify the underlying value conflict that pertains to contrasting stakeholders’ views. Students do so through group work by selecting and working on one morally salient case study with an identifiable ethical problem (the exercise offers 13 such cases to pick from, but instructors are encouraged to add their own cases to this list). The students are encouraged to solve the value conflict by searching for already existing solutions proposed by different stakeholders (for example, designers, journalists, scholars, engineers, policy makers, etc.), and then analysing how a particular solution prioritizes certain values over others.

Interdisciplinary Writing Assignment

This interdisciplinary writing assignment is an example of how students can analyse and argue a complex problem from different perspectives. The assignment is discipline- neutral and can be adapted to different subject areas and themes. It can be chosen to be completed individually or, on the contrary, as group work. In this document you will also find an elaborate example concerning the disciplines law and linguistics.

Podcast as examination

The materials we share here were made for the 2023-2024 course "Wicked Legal Ethics" at Erasmus School of Law, but the podcast has been used as examination in different courses. The podcast examination is a very useful method for allowing students to develop critical reflection and creative expression. The podcast is a partial group examination, to be combined with individual testing. Testing every student on an individual level on course content before the creative podcast process, puts every group member on an equal footing and provides them with the confidence to enter into constructive and critical discussions with their fellow students. The podcast has been discussed in M. Luth-Morgan et al, “Chat-GPT als katalysator voor meer authentieke toetsing: praktijkvoorbeelden uit het ethiekonderwijs” Ars Aequi sept 2024 (Dutch).
