Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Intro to Open Science

Created for the GSLS Master introduction Days 2025, Utrecht University. This lecture will introduce you to the principles and practices of Open Science, a global movement aimed at making scientific research more accessible, transparent, and collaborative. You will learn why open science matters for accelerating discoveries, improving research quality, and enhancing reproducibility. Key topics include open access publishing, open and FAIR data, preprints, open peer review, and sharing research tools and methods. The session will also cover practical tips on how you can integrate open science practices into your own research from the start of your graduate journey. By embracing open science, you contribute to a more inclusive and impactful scientific community.

Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.

Navigating the Landscape of Blended Higher Education

In recent years, blended teaching formats have become increasingly important in higher education. Designing effective blended education is challenging and requires a profound knowledge of digital tools and technologies, as well as the didactical proficiency to deploy them effectively and efficiently within the learning environment. However, little is known about didactical design principles to support teachers in creating an effective blended design. This chapter reports on the combined results of two independently conducted extensive literature reviews that investigated (a) didactical strategies, methods, and techniques concerning online education in the existing empirical research on higher education, and (b) the effects of different blended teaching formats, compared to face-to-face education, on learning outcomes and/or psychosocial outcomes in higher education students. It was found that blended education can enhance student achievement and psychosocial well-being, yet that the instructional approach plays a crucial role. Combining the insights of both studies has subsequently led to a series of evidence-informed recommendations to design effective blended education with a view to the broad development of students. Readers will be provided with practical guidance on how to implement these design principles in educational practice.

Publication strategies & Open Access: Choosing a journal to publish in

Choosing a journal to publish in Where will you publish your next journal article? With thousands of journals available it can be hard to find the right journal for your work. At the bottom of this page you can find an overview of tools that can help you create a 'shortlist' of journals to publish in. Some disciplines or research schools have developed journal lists, providing an overview of the journals most relevant to them. Aims & scope After creating a shortlist of suitable journals you need to check the aims and scope of the journals. Open Access options When choosing a journal the options to publish in Open Access can be important as well. All EUR-researchers are required to make their publications Open Access and most research funders have adopted policies that make Open Access publishing mandatory. AAbstracting and indexing information Where is the journal indexed? In other words: in which databases will researchers and students be able to find your article in their search results? Are these multidisciplinary databases, like Scopus or Web of Science, and/or discipline specific databases like EconLit, ERIC, PsycINFO or Sociological Abstracts? Are these databases you and your peers use? Tools to find journals to publish in Several tools have been developed to help you find suitable journals: these tools allow you to upload title, abstract and/or keywords of your article and – using data of articles already published - matching journals are shown. Some of these tools are publisher specific, others are publisher neutral. Journal lists Some disciplines and schools have created list of journals to publish in. These list are sometimes also used to evaluate researchers. Suggested.

Measuring academic impact: An author-level metric: the H-index

An author-level metric: the h-index The H-index, proposed by physicist J.E. Hirsch (hence the H) in 2005, is a way to measure the individual academic output of a researcher. Which H-index? To create the list of publications and the number of citations received you can use different sources. Determining the H-index in Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar In these handouts you can find the steps to determine the H-index of a researcher in. Related. Support.

Measuring academic impact: Tracking your research impact: sources & metrics

Tracking your research impact Research impact can be measured in many ways. Citation databases and alternative metric tools can be used to assess the output and impact of an individual’s paper or body of work. Three main bibliometric sources Various tools are available to identify a range of bibliometrics. Alternative sources and metrics Certain disciplines, journals, and document types may not be well represented in the more traditional sources for citation analysis, such as Web of Science and Scopus. Limitations There has been much debate about the use of bibliometrics in academia. Support The Research Evaluation and Assessment Service (REAS) team of the University Library - member of the Research Intelligence Community EUR - is available to consult with faculty and staff about measuring research impact.
