Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Grasduinen in waterbouw

plusROOF: Steel-glass roof system with innovative SSG bonding

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Tim Seidel summarizes the plusROOF research project, which investigated the structural bonding of glass directly to steel substructures as a more efficient and design-flexible alternative to traditional complex and expensive skylight construction. The project identified a suitable polyurethane anti-corrosion coating that met adhesion standards, developed a parameter-based planning tool for double-curved designs, and validated the system through component tests. A 5.5x3.1 meter demonstrator successfully underwent rigorous testing for air permeability, driving rain tightness, and wind load resistance, achieving excellent performance and laying the foundation for future regulatory approvals and practical applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Seidel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Water-Filled Glass as a Heat Displacement System for Saving Energy in Buildings

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Brandon Mok introduces Water-filled Glass (WFG), a technology that replaces the gas in an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) with a water layer connected to a mechanical system with a heat exchanger and pump. The core function is to manage a building's energy demand by controlling the water temperature to optimize the glass surface temperature, thereby reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Studies show WFG can provide 47-72% better energy savings than double glazing and 34-61% better than triple glazing. The presentation further explores a novel concept called SEED (Saving Energy through Energy Distribution), which uses the WFG system to redistribute heat from building facades requiring cooling to those requiring heating simultaneously. A preliminary simulation for office buildings in London and New York showed that WFG alone achieved 58-72% energy savings, with the SEED concept providing an additional 10-13% in savings by balancing energy demands across different orientations. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Brandon Mok for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. The creation of these resources has been (partially) funded by the ERASMUS+ grant program of the European Union under grant no. 2022-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000089750.
