Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

In this video, Aleksandra Sweryn explains the critical role of fire-resistant glass in building safety, particularly for compartmentalization in public spaces. Standard glass products like insulating or laminated units offer little fire protection, as they break quickly and can contribute to fire spread. In contrast, specialized fire-resistant glass, such as AGC's Pyropane (tempered with low-E coating) and Pyrobel (with intumescent gel), is designed to withstand high temperatures. These products work by reflecting radiant heat or by having the gel expand to form an insulating foam that blocks heat transfer. To be certified, glazing must pass rigorous standard tests (like EN1363/4) to achieve fire-resistance ratings (E, EW, EI) based on integrity and insulation performance, with even small changes in the gel's composition significantly impacting its effectiveness. In this video Martina Eliášová explains the various cold-working techniques used to cut and shape standard float glass panes after production. The video outlines that mechanical processing is a fundamental step all flat glass undergoes and includes key operations like cutting, grinding, and drilling. Several cutting methods are described: the traditional surface-cut and break method, diamond disc cutting for thicker glass, laser cutting, and water jet cutting, which has the advantage of avoiding thermal stress. The video also details edge grinding, a process crucial for safety, aesthetics, and increasing the glass's strength by removing micro-cracks from cutting. Furthermore, it covers drilling, typically performed with diamond-coated tubular drills, and notes the specific standards that govern hole placement and dimensions. A key point emphasized is that all mechanical processing must be completed before the glass undergoes any thermal tempering process. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project.
