Game Development with Students

The project Game Development with Students introduces interested educators to an innovative teaching tool with practical insights from the international relations classroom. Game development with students is a specialized form of game-based and project-based learning. It incentivizes both student creativity and in-class student-teacher co-creation and enables a particularly participative and result-oriented approach to the subject matter. The method is thematically flexible enough to travel across different fields of study and is adaptable to different levels of complexity. To enable other educators to implement this innovative teaching tool, we develop instructional materials (an educators handbook as well as educational videos), providing both general information on the experiential, game-based learning theory undergirding the method as well as practical, hands-on tips and trick on how to implement it in different educational settings. In doing so, we address the important, interconnected educational challenges of the transferability and sustainability of teacher developed tools.

Workshop Recognition and Rewards

The interactive workshop Recognition and Rewards focuses on the impact of recognition and rewards on the choices made within research regarding Open Science principles. It is notable that, in the current system, Open Science-related tasks receive less recognition and appreciation than 'traditional' research tasks. The workshop demonstrates how the societal impact of research can change through a cultural shift regarding recognition and rewards for Open Science tasks.

Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

The Evolution of Structural Glass Design

In this video, James O'Callaghan traces structural glass from its emergence in the mid‑1990s as a substitute for wood and steel through to its use in the present day. Glass offers unique transparency, strength, and stiffness, making it suitable for beams, floors, and columns. However, its purely elastic behavior provides no warning before failure. Key challenges center mainly on connections, where failure can occur without visible signs of overstress. Because bolted connections create such problematic local stresses, novel inserted connections were developed to preserve transparency and improve structural efficiency . Realised projects include Apple's Fifth Avenue cube (2006 and 2011), Zorlu in Istanbul, and the Steve Jobs Theater. Lastly, James O'Callaghan advises future engineers to approach glass with curiosity, not limiting it to windows or structural roles, but exploring its full potential. Despite its embodied carbon, glass remains vital for connecting people to light and the outdoors. Its future depends on fresh, naive eyes that ask what glass can do, not what it has done. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to James O'Callaghan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

Constructive Alignment Prompt Guide

This prompt guide helps teachers, course coordinators, and educational advisors use MS Copilot (or another LLM) to review a course design through the lens of constructive alignment. It supports you in producing: A Constructive Alignment Table connecting Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs), Assessment, and Teaching & Learning Activities (TLAs), and A brief Strengths & Weaknesses overview to identify improvement opportunities. The guide was initially constructed for use in our UTQ Design course (Dutch, University Teaching Qualification)

Novel Switchable Glazing Assemblies for Privacy & Glare Control in a Mediterranean Climate

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Etienne Magri details a research study investigating the combination of PDLC and SPD adaptive glazing technologies to enhance glare control in buildings, using Malta's subtropical climate as a case study. The project involved testing individual and combined laminates within a scale model, evaluating visual appearance and glare using DGP metrics. Results demonstrated that the combined technologies achieved near-complete blackout, effectively eliminating solar glare while maintaining privacy, and successfully transformed static facades into dynamic systems with adjustable transparency. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Etienne Magri for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Understanding Glass Codes and Standards

In this video, Martina Eliášová outlines the critical role of codes and standards in the use of structural glass in modern architecture. As glass evolves from a simple infill material to a primary structural element in beams, columns, and load-bearing walls, ensuring safety becomes paramount. The framework has evolved from national standards to unified European Eurocodes, which harmonize design, manufacturing, and testing rules across the EU to ensure quality and safety. The key groups of standards cover glass production, material property determination (e.g., EN 1288, EN 16612), and the design of load-bearing structures (with the upcoming EN 19100). Essential testing standards are also outlined, including those for impact resistance from human bodies (EN 12600), manual burglary attacks (EN 356), and resistance to firearms and explosions, all necessary to meet the reliability and safety requirements for building structures throughout their service life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
