Byzantium & Friends | 103. About time, with Jesse Torgerson Thursday Nov 02, 2023

Jesse Torgerson (Wesleyan University) and I take a stab at understanding time, as it was measured, structured, and experienced in so many overlapping ways by Christian east Romans. Their days, months, and years were defined by the state tax cycle, the Church festival cycle, and nature itself, to name the most important temporal grids. Jesse's recent monograph focuses on an author (or two) who made interesting innovations in chronology: The Chronographia of George the Synkellos and Theophanes: The Ends of Time in Ninth-Century Constantinople (Brill 2022).

Patrologia Graeca

A digitized version of Migne’s Patrologia Graeca, a collection of texts in Greek by church fathers, theologians, councils, and many others from late antiquity through the high Middle Ages, as well as other Greek medieval texts, in the original Greek with some translations into English, German, and French. The texts are indexed alphabetically by author and may be read online or downloaded in .pdf format. Part of Documenta Catholica Omnia, a browsable collection of links to Latin and Greek religious texts including the Christian scriptures, theology, liturgy, canon law, and papal and synodal legislation and decrees, from apostolic times through the reign of Benedict XVI. Texts are drawn from out-of-copyright collections or volumes like the Bullarium Romanum, Monumenta Germaniae Historicum, Rerum Italicarum, and Acta Sanctorum.
